Elsie Meeks has been a trailblazer in the CDFI industry, co-founding the Lakota Fund in 1986 and laying the groundwork for one of the first Native CDFIs in the U.S. Her leadership showed how culturally-tailored financial services can address economic disparities in Native communities. As a former Executive Director of Oweesta Corporation and a former OFN Board Member, she continued to drive meaningful change, strengthening Native CDFIs and advocating for their needs. Her work has left a lasting legacy on Native economic development and continues to inspire the next generation of leaders. #40DaysToOFN40 #NativeCDFIs #Leadership #EconomicDevelopment

Since 2001, Native CDFIs have been crucial in addressing the financial needs of Native American communities through culturally tailored services. A 2021 study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis found that Native CDFIs significantly boost credit scores in Indian Country, where non-Native CDFIs do not. Their deep cultural ties and local expertise are driving sustainable economic development and building wealth across generations. #40DaysToOFN40 #NativeCDFIs #CDFIHistory #CDFIImpact
