Imaging blood vessels in early-stage avian embryos has a variety of practical applications, but optical imaging faces significant challenges like eggshell opacity and light scattering. https://bit.ly/4dTMffs To overcome these limitations, Caltech researchers revisit an approach based on laser speckle contrast imaging, demonstrating a high-quality and non-invasive visualization of blood vessels in few-day-old chicken eggs. The method has potential applications for studies of cardiovascular development and angiogenesis. #biology #biomedicaloptics #scienceandtechnology #imaging

#TBT to #WorldPhotoDay! Did you know? Edwin Land, #OpticaHonoraryMember and co-founder of Polaroid, created the first inexpensive filters that polarized light. At first, photographs were developed with chemical baths, drying equipment, and other supplies over days. Instead, Land created a tool with both a negative film and a positive receiving sheet: Instant photography. 📸 He introduced the “Land Camera” at our 1947 Winter Meeting.

Immensely proud to have helped in the steering committee of the 2024 Student Leadership Development Summit with National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. Students learned important lessons on grant writing and proposals, graduate fellowships, entrepreneurship, industry, and government positions within STEM, and focused on mental health. Students from numerous institutions received information on going into fields like medical physics, astrophysics, and engineering. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration , American Physical Society , American Institute of Physics and more made their presence known with speakers. Special thanks to Optica and Chad Stark for hosting us and speaking to students. Students made meaningful connections to professionals and each other and left informing me about how empowered they felt both in terms of knowledge on how to proceed in their careers but also as individual people pursuing physics. Thank you to the executive boards of both parent organizations, the founders, and my amazing team under the leadership of Tracy Simone Edwards . The steering committee truly were wonderful people to work with. I am grateful to have served in any way possible to my fellow students and wish them well in their studies.
