National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) researchers presented a procedure to validate the bidirectional reflectance distribution function, enabling further work to readily collect traceable UV data: https://bit.ly/48bDlIG Published in Applied Optics [#OPG_AO], the technique utilizes a spectrophotometer and provides measurements for materials commonly found in public spaces. Similar procedures can also be adopted for BRDF measurements at various wavelengths accessible to spectrophotometers. Written by: Aaron M. Goldfain, Grace E. Waters, Lynn Davis, Heather J. Optica ONLINE MEETING ON VR: REGISTER HERE: https://lnkd.in/dV87nUCx. On Tuesday October 22nd at 10 am Eastern DT, 4pm in Central Europe, our online industry meeting is focused on the future of optics in virtual reality, where we will explore the evolving needs of next-generation VR systems, specifically focusing on improvements in resolution, image quality, and wearability. These advancements are critical as the VR industry looks to support both consumer and professional use cases in increasingly diverse fields. We are thrilled to have Douglas Lanman, Meta’s Senior Director of Display Systems Research, who will provide insights on Meta's developments in VR technology. Meta’s recent Quest 3 headset represents an exciting leap forward in affordable consumer VR, offering visual clarity and a comfortable user experience. In addition, alongside this consumer focus, we will hear from Stan Larroque, CEO of Lynx Mixed Reality, whose headset caters to professional applications, emphasizing industrial use cases where precision and reliability are key In addition to our hardware experts, we will be joined by Johan Cruse, Competence Development Manager from Volvo Trucks who will provide an end-user perspective and their preferred future. During the pandemic, Volvo Trucks faced a challenge in bringing a new electric truck to the global market. How could they train more than 20,000 service technicians worldwide when neither trainers nor trainees could travel? Volvo took advantage of Virtual Reality, showing us all how to rethink new ways of training and learning. So what will Volvo develop next and what photonics technologies do they need? As usual, our online industry meeting format links end-user needs with photonics companies. This time, it includes specialists in Adaptive Optics and Testing Systems for Waveguides for VR, such as AddOptics, OPTOFIDELITY, and PHASICS, companies in wafer-level optics testing, like Alfamation, and contract manufacturers, like the global giant Jabil. In addition, innovative companies such as Nexus Photonics and Inseye will be with us. And how about you? Can you support the developments of Meta or Lynx-R, if so, join us in our zoom room and prepare the answer to the Optica Question: What can you do for others and what can others do for you? This meeting will be hosted by my Optica colleague Olga Raz. Including Speakers: Frank Marsman, AddOptics, Head of Business Development Pekka L., OPTOFIDELITY, Chief Business Officer Sébastien Reithinger Alfamation, Technical Leader of Automated Testing Piotr Krukowski, Inseye, CTO Sven Sassning, Jabil, Business Development Manager Valentin Genuer PHASICS, Field Application Manager and Tin Komljenovic, Nexus Photonics, CEO

What is quantum ghost imaging (QGI), and how can it be applied to bioimaging? https://bit.ly/3A0TpjQ QGI is a technique that measures absorption at extremely low light intensities. An Optica [#OPG_Optica] study from Los Alamos National Laboratory uses the method for extreme low-light bioimaging and the imaging of light-sensitive samples, where minimizing illumination intensity is critical to preventing degradation. By implementing QGI with a single-photon detector, the team successfully removed the need for an optical delay line during the imaging process and showed that QGI can be used for practical bioimaging.
