Machine learning's rapid advancement has increased demand for extensive matrix-vector multiplication, straining traditional computing systems and amplifying energy efficiency needs. To address this, four scientists from NTT RESEARCH Physics & Informatics (PHI) Lab have published a paper in Optica that processes and demonstrates a hybrid (optical and electronic) solution. The proposed hyperspectral in-memory computing architecture, utilizing space and frequency multiplexing, offers a route to energy-efficient optical computing. The Optica IIT Madras Student Chapter conducted an outreach program at PS Senior Secondary School in Chennai and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Puducherry. The program aimed to demonstrate basic optics experiments to spark students' curiosity about the field of optics. The interaction between the students and Optica members was very positive. The program was deemed a success, with many students expressing that it was a unique experience. They appreciated the hands-on demonstrations, which provided a different learning experience compared to reading about the concepts in textbooks. This was possible because of the dedicated Optica members from IITM. Special thanks to our faculty mentors, Professor Balaji Srinivasan, and Professor Sudharsanan Srinivasan, for their insights and contributions that made this program a success. Optica
