Mastering REC Management: Balancing Complexity and Simplicity in ETRM Systems Renewable energy certificates (RECs) linked to RPS retirement obligations can be pretty complex to manage in CTRM systems or any reporting tool, for that matter. While other commodity-based instruments can be categorized through high-level groupings by their intrinsic properties (such as Power, Natural Gas, and Crude grades), RECs are often traded based on the optionality of their potential functions (namely, their Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requirement eligibilities). Adding complexity is their inherent 'vintage' dimension, which influences their lifespan and terms of cross-state applicability. This dimension is determined by the state, which may be based on either the calendar year or the reporting year. Unfortunately, the diversity in the 'shapes' of these instruments means that REC registry platforms do not offer a standardized naming convention, posing significant challenges for their categorization and standardization within a system. How do you tackle a problem like this? On one hand, you might choose a path that captures absolute granularity, creating unique REC product names for the numerous optional permutations that may exist. On the other hand, you might prefer summarized group names, which are easier to maintain but may lack the nuances your business needs for effective inventory management.
