We did a thing yesterday 💅😊Our economic liberation project students stepped into City Hall, for most, for the first time! They toured the business licensing office, connecting face-to-face with the staff who process these crucial documents. Our project goes beyond just teaching business basics, it’s about empowering our community to navigate city systems and take up space🔥 By bridging the gap between immigrant entrepreneurs and local government, we’re fostering confidence and breaking down barriers. Proud to see our students taking up space and making their presence felt in Long Beach! 🙌 Thanks Hilda Aguilar-Jurado (from pacific Gateway) for making this possible!

Thank you The James Irvine Foundation for the continued support!
Due to workplace, language, and economic barriers, Latina women have a lower labor force participation rate in California compared to the state average. Additionally, those who are employed often face substantial obstacles in securing high-quality jobs. New data and insights from Public Policy Institute of California can help us better understand how to boost economic mobility among Latina women while also addressing broader economic challenges in California. Authors Marisol Cuellar Mejia, Sarah Bohn, and Julien Lafortune note that wage increases for Latina workers over time aren’t keeping pace with gains in educational attainment. Latina women are also overrepresented in low-wage sectors like service and hospitality, which rarely offer opportunities for advancement or comprehensive benefits. One of the most effective ways to boost individual economic prosperity is to remove barriers to entrepreneurship. The James Irvine Foundation is proud to support grantees like ÓRALE: Organizing Rooted in Abolition, Liberation, and Empowerment, which provides case management, business development coaching, education, and financial literacy training for underinvested groups. Organizations like this are instrumental in fostering economic growth for Latina women and in making California’s economy stronger and more inclusive. #HispanicHeritageMonth #QualityJobs #Research https://lnkd.in/gafbk9Hg

Today is the last day of Long Beach Gives. In the next couple of hours, people from the region will be donating to the causes they care about. At ORALE, we see the powerful impact our bi-weekly distributions make on immigrant families. But we need your support to ensure our sites have the necessary materials to keep running. So today we have a message from one of our site leaders: Elizabeth. We hope she inspires you to donate today 🩷 Bit.ly/oralegives24

Tomorrow is Long Beach Gives! But you can start donating now! At ORALE, we’re committed to ensuring everyone has access to basic needs. We understand the challenges communities of color face, with immigrant communities experiencing additional hurdles due to immigration status and language barriers. Our mutual aid program is more than just a food distribution center—it’s a power hub. Our leaders not only provide food but also foster advocacy for transformative policy change to ensure universal food access. Your donation will keep our mutual aid program running with essential materials and help us build community power to expand food access for all families in California. Join us in making a difference! Your support goes beyond providing immediate relief; it fuels long-term change for a more equitable California. 🩷 bit.ly/oralegives24 (Tomorrow is the last day)

On September 10th, 2024, Mayor Rex Richardson and the Long Beach City Council honored the inaugural graduates of our Economic Liberation Cohort. These immigrant entrepreneurs, recognized for completing our program, represent the future of our city. Special thanks to Jackie, our Economic Justice Manager, for highlighting the significant impact of the Economic Liberation Project during the council meeting. As always, a thank you to our partners in this amazing project: Pacific Gateway, UCLA Labor Center, Advocacy Chiefs LLC, and The James Irvine Foundation.

We did it! ¡Lo logramos! $1.1 million for the Long Beach Justice Fund! This would not have been possible without all the community members who turned out for city council! Thank you to our community, to our coalition partners, and to everyone who made this victory possible! So proud of every single person who made a public comment tonight…thank you 🥹 With this investment, families in Long Beach will have the possibility of being represented in immigration court by an attorney, completely free of charge to the families. This is a great win for the city of Long Beach!
