Oregon Agricultural Trust partners with farmers and ranchers to protect and pass on their land to future generations.
About us
OAT is an agricultural land trust that works collaboratively around the state to safeguard Oregon’s farm and ranch lands and the rural communities that depend upon them. We permanently protect agricultural land, help it stay in production, educate our community, and help advocate for farmland preservation. OAT preserves ag land mainly through donation and purchase of working land easements — voluntary agreements between a land trust and a landowner to remove development rights that interfere with farming and ranching. We also educate farmers, ranchers, attorneys, and the public about why and how to preserve farmland and plan for succession. We work with our peers to increase ag land preservation statewide. And we collaborate on advocacy.

Farm transition myths can get in the way of setting and managing clear expectations among heirs, leading to potential conflicts. Open communication in the present is a great way to navigate the complexities of transition while maintaining relationships. "While some families sail through this process with few disagreements, others find themselves fighting with siblings and parents, sometimes leading to permanently damaged relationships. By explaining things up front, the goal is for heirs to come to understand and accept their parents’ decisions and avoid conflict with each other down the road."

In Oregon Agriculture by the Numbers, part 4, OSU Assistant Professors Dan Bigelow and Nathan Stacey focus attention on producer characteristics, touching on some interesting findings and small shifts for both the U.S. and Oregon. The average age of Oregon's farmers and ranchers is still rising overall, which indicates that farm transfer will continue to be a pressing issue here. -Oregon's average producer age went up slightly from 57.9 to 58.6 years. -About half of the farmers and ranchers in Oregon are between ages 55-74 -Farmers with 6-10 years of experience increased by about 5% -Farmers with 5 or fewer years of experience decreased by 1.6% - 7% of Oregon farmers and ranchers are 34 or younger.
