We love the bioscience trade because every day, our members advance scientific platforms and discoveries to improve patient care. A great example is #ORBioMember Keliomics, which recently received additional NIH funding to further its work with laboratory-created tumors—known as “ex vivo” models (not in human or animal) — to support biopharmaceutical development. The Keliomics mission includes facilitating research that better serves multiple populations. https://lnkd.in/d6wdzVxQ And if this mission resonates with you or someone you know, Keliomics is hiring: https://lnkd.in/gNQuhrZq

It was another fantastic day one at the EDCO - Economic Development for Central Oregon Bend Venture Conference (BVC), which officially kicked off at the Tower Theatre with an engaging conversation—“Cold Calls, Hot Deals”—between Julie Sandler, PSL Ventures & Pioneer Square Labs, and Jenn Lynch, BVC LLC Fund & Portland Seed Fund. The conversation underscored the importance of time-honored techniques in direct sales outreach even in these highly digital times. Super engaging Early-Stage pitches followed, often incorporating AI into innovative solutions ranging from simplifying code and real estate searches/transactions to safer recycling of lithium-ion batteries. In that context, we particularly enjoyed Mark Drummond’s “Technologist’s Tale,” a presentation that traced AI’s roots and predicted its future. Animated evening networking closed out the day at the stunning Broken Top Club. It was great to see #ORBioMembers John Harkness, Ph.D. (Rewire AI), Caitlin Vargas (Collaborative EDO), Norah Green Verbout (Aronora, Inc.), Mark Brady (Business Oregon), Eduardo Ceballos (xBiologix), Cara Turano (Oregon Entrepreneurs Network)*, Aditi Martin (Oregon Health & Science University), Heather Ellis, Rene Miller, MS, and Adrienne Klein (Oregon Bioscience Incubator and OTRADI)**, among others, and to meet so many engaged in our region’s vibrant economic community. * Investors: please ask Cara at OEN about dilutive capital investments in the AOBIO program, of which the Oregon Bio Association is a collaborating partner. ** We also enjoyed OTRADI’s Accelerate Networking Lunch pre-conference seminar before the afternoon program.

Yesterday afternoon, we had the pleasure of co-hosting a fundraiser for Congresswoman Andrea Salinas alongside Genentech at their Access Solutions location in NE Portland. Thank you to the leaders from companies (many in her district) who attended and/or contributed: Bernard A. Fox PhD from UbiVac, Matt Beaudet from Araceli Biosciences, Tim Ellrodt from Microsystems Engineering Co and John Harkness, Ph.D. from Rewire AI. We appreciate their leadership and support in strengthening the local bioscience community. Liisa Bozinovic shared a sneak peek of the impressive data we'll be releasing later this year in our economic impact report - stay tuned. We’re also grateful for the Genentech team who made this event possible—Bill Ames, Jenn Klotz, Tim Layton, and the rest of their team who came out to support (many of whom live in CD-6). Congresswoman Salinas is in a tight race, and while we may not always agree on every issue, she remains a fair, solutions-oriented leader. It’s essential to have advocates in Congress who are committed to finding practical solutions for our growing biotech industry. Thank you again to everyone who made this event possible and to all those supporting our efforts to grow the bioscience ecosystem in Oregon. #biotech #community #leadership

A favorite aspect of yesterday’s Biotech Summit was the span of generations that participated. During our Innovation Showcase, high school students from Valley Catholic School & SSMO Campus and Oregon Charter Academy pitched outstanding biotech proposals to attendees that included groups from Lakeridge High School and Hillsboro High School, biotech professionals, executives, and investors. Congratulations to our Innovation Showcase Winners: Lia Choi, Natanya Villegas, Matthew Rames, Matthew Bryant, Adam Tuttle, J. Peter Campbell. A big thank you to the Federal Innovation representatives for outstanding agency presentations and hosting informative lunchtime Resource Roundtables: Stephen Konya, Mark Byers, Beth Ripley, Angela Dunn, MD, MPH, Robert Wright, Haissum Shah, Julie Vanderkolk, John Bender, MPH, MS, Ashley Ashworth, plus Steve Thompson for Business Oregon. Kudos to J. Wesley Cochran (He/Him/His), Luiz Bertassoni, and Christie Dudenhoefer for a compelling overview of microfluidics and the CorMic Tech Hub in Corvallis. Hats off to our Showcase and Summit moderators and hosts: Nancy Lime, Jackie Wirz, PhD, Sally Bell, Holly Rockweiler, John Harkness, Ph.D., Tanis Morris, Tim Layton, and Kate Sinner. We appreciate the fine Oregon wineries that poured tastings at our evening Bio on the Vine reception: Archery Summit Winery, Argyle Winery, Domaine Divio, The Four Graces, Rex Hill Vineyards-Winery, Stoller Family Estate, and Tumwater Vineyard. Up next: Bio on the Rocks returns to The Porter in our beloved downtown Portland, November 14, 5 – 7:30 p.m.
