🌊 National Estuaries Week is Almost Here! 🌊 From September 21-28, it is all about estuaries, aka the nursery of the sea (how cute is that baby coho?!) 😎🐟 Oregon’s estuaries are vital ecosystems that protect our coastlines, support diverse wildlife, and play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. As National Estuaries Week approaches, it’s the perfect time to recognize the importance of conserving these incredible environments. Through our Campaign for Oregon’s Estuaries, Oregon Shores is dedicated to protecting these vital habitats by advocating for meaningful protections in the upcoming Estuary Management Plan updates and engaging communities in stewardship. Let’s work together to ensure a healthy and thriving future for our coast and communities! Stay tuned for events and ways to get involved! #OregonShores #NationalEstuariesWeek #WadeIn

Orcas off Depoe Bay this past Thursday! Did you know one of our CoastWatch efforts is contributing to collecting and reporting killer whale sightings? Community science is powerful, and this is an excellent example of working together to learn more 💙 We also help to collect reports of stranded marine mammals, sunflower sea stars, and sea star wasting syndrome. Bookmark these pages for future use: 🖤 Report an orca sighting: bit.ly/OregonOrcas 🦭 Report a stranded marine mammal: https://lnkd.in/ggpxqepf 🌟 Report a sunflower star or sea star wasting syndrome: bit.ly/Report_Sea_Stars Get the details of the sighting in this repost from The Oregonian 👇 Skipper Craig Calkins of Lincoln City spotted eight or nine killer whales on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024 when he was about a mile from shore off Cape Foulweather near Depoe Bay. According to the Oregon Coast Killer Whale Monitoring Program, the pod was heading south and most likely feeding on sharks and other fish. Last year, a group of whale watchers along the Oregon coast spotted another pod of orcas hunting prey together in an organized group near Cape Foulweather. Jaklyn Larsen and Hannah Dimich captured the rare site.

🌊🌟 Have you recently encountered a sunflower sea star along the Oregon coast? These incredible creatures are vital for our marine ecosystems' health but are critically endangered due to sea star wasting disease. Your sightings are crucial to their recovery! We're so grateful to our CoastWatch volunteers who spot and report sunflower sea stars when they see them on their miles 💙🌻 If you spot one, please report it here: https://lnkd.in/gvC5bZXT. Each report contributes valuable data to scientists and conservationists. Your efforts help monitor and protect these important sea stars. Let's join forces to secure a bright future for our marine life! 🌊🌟 📸: CoastWatcher Angela Whitlock #SunflowerSeastar #MarineConservation #OregonCoast #OregonShores #SaveOurStars #SeaStarWasting #OregonKelpAlliance #OregonCoastAquarium
