We’re continuing our celebration of female physicians, researchers, and health care professionals with another installment of “Minds Behind the Science” featuring Dr. Amy Taneja MD, FACOG, Director of Medical Affairs at Organon. Dr. Taneja is a board-certified OB/GYN with nearly 20 years of experience, specializing in women’s health. From the start, Dr. Taneja was passionate about improving the lives of women. Since graduating from medical school, she has dedicated her career to advancing women’s health, making many impactful contributions to the field. One of Dr. Taneja’s most memorable patient experiences occurred early on in her career. As a first-year resident, she was thrilled to deliver a patient’s first baby – someone she had followed in the resident clinic. However, post-delivery complications led to abnormal postpartum uterine bleeding, requiring urgent intervention. Despite the team’s best efforts, they had to perform a life-saving hysterectomy. This experience was emotionally challenging, but it underscored the importance of teamwork and compassionate care, as well as the importance of timely intervention and management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), a potentially life-threatening condition. At Organon, Dr. Taneja is responsible for providing medical input and helping to shape how Organon educates about conditions such as PPH, bacterial vaginosis (BV), and fertility. This is incredibly important work to help people understand the different disease areas – everyone from health care professionals to patients. You may recognize her as she also plays a vital role in helping to educate patients and healthcare professionals through content in our social and media activities. Join us in recognizing the incredible women making a difference in medicine. 👏 #MindsBehindTheScience #WomenInMedicine #WomenInMedicineMonth #PostpartumHemorrhage #PPH #WomensHealth #OBGYN #Obstetricians #Gynecologists

Our feature, “Minds Behind the Science,” celebrates female physicians, researchers, and health care professionals. Today, we spotlight Dr. Patricia Carney, MD, FACOG, the Global Medical Affairs Strategy Lead for Maternal Health at Organon and a board-certified OB/GYN, whose team provides the medical background and support to help ensure treatments for the management of abnormal postpartum bleeding, or postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), are available to women affected by this condition. When Dr. Carney was four years old, she visited a hospital with her father, a physical therapist. A nurse asked her, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Responding proudly, she said, “I want to be a nurse.” The nurse’s unexpected response changed the path of Dr. Carney’s life, “You know, girls can also be doctors.” She decided then and there, “I’m going to be a doctor.” Women were still in the minority when Dr. Carney went to medical school. She faced negative encounters and often felt out of place despite all of her accomplishments. These experiences fueled her determination to prove that she also belonged. After graduating, Dr. Carney recalls entering practice and attending her first hospital all staff meeting. Out of over a hundred doctors – only three of them were women. It was these moments that helped shape Dr. Carney’s perspective on how she approaches different medical populations. Today, Dr. Carney emphasizes the importance of encouraging people, regardless of gender or background, to help future generations see themselves in these roles. During her 15-year tenure as a practicing OB/GYN, Dr. Carney saw firsthand the effects of PPH, and its potentially devastating effects – emotional and physical. Every OB/GYN has a patient they never forget. For Dr. Carney, it was a woman who developed PPH. Dr. Carney and others on the care team managed her condition, but the experience left a lasting impact on Dr. Carney and the patient. This is what drives Dr. Carney’s commitment to improving treatments for PPH. Join us in recognizing the incredible women making a difference in medicine. 👏 #MindsBehindTheScience #WomenInMedicine #WomenInMedicineMonth #PostpartumHemorhhage #WomensHealth #OBGYN #Obstetricians #Gynecologists

Hearing firsthand from women and their healthcare providers about their needs inspires the work we do at Organon. This week’s announcement – positive Phase 3 study results in a common and often debilitating condition like dysmenorrhea (painful periods) – makes me incredibly proud of the collective efforts across Organon as we make strides towards our vision of a better and healthier every day for every woman. I am inspired and excited about the path ahead, and grateful for the work my Organon colleagues do as we aim to change the status quo of women’s healthcare. We are relentless in our pursuit to address health conditions that are unique to women, affect her disproportionately or impact her differently, and our latest research study results bring us one step closer to achieving these goals. In 2020, the use of #biosimilars generated a total of $7.9 billion in savings for patients in the U.S., bringing the 10-year total savings from biosimilars up to $12.6 billion. As more biosimilars enter the market, there is opportunity to help more patients realize potential savings and increase understanding of what a biosimilar is: 👉 Biosimilars are biologic medications that are highly similar to biologic medications already approved by the FDA. 👉 There are no clinically meaningful differences between a biosimilar and its reference biologic in terms of safety, purity and potency. 👉 Biosimilars can be prescribed for patients with or without previous treatment history on an originator biologic. Medical gaslighting is a phenomenon where medical concerns are minimized or dismissed. For women and people of color who are disproportionately impacted by this issue, it can be a silent struggle to be heard. Without prompt medical care, including proper diagnosis and treatment, patients may face emotional and mental distress, as well as prolonged pain and other physical symptoms. If you’re experiencing symptoms, speak up. Trust your instincts and advocate for yourself to help get the care you need. #PainAwarenessMonth #MedicalGaslighting #PatientAdvocacy
