How do you set yourself up for success when using fluoroscopy in total hip arthroplasty? Dr. Jeremy Gililland shared some practical tips recently at the International Masters Anterior Course (IMACx) event. Here are some key takeaways from his presentation: ✅ Start with a solid foundation by beginning with a functional standing AP pelvis image. Every patient has a unique pelvic plane - based on how their pelvis stands in space. ✅ Recreate that functional pelvic plane intraoperatively with your fluoro: Adjust the tilt of the C-arm until the images match. ✅ Augment your fluoroscopy with AI: Dr. Gililland recommends tools like OrthoGrid’s Hip AI, which first corrects for the image distortion inherent in non-flat panel C-arm images, and also presents the relevant information you need for cup position and leg length/offset. He shares a surgical case of a patient with a posterior tilt and fused spine, Dr. Gililland emphasizes the “narrow safe zone” for cup positioning in this type of case and plans to position the cup more vertical than usual.
