Reflecting on an unforgettable experience at MiCareerQuest 2024! On March 27th, we had the incredible opportunity to be a part of the inaugural MiCareerQuest, an event that brought together over 8,000 students from West Michigan to explore diverse career possibilities under one roof. It was a whirlwind day, but the rewards were immense! At OAM Surgery Center at MidTowne, we were thrilled to join in and shed light on the myriad of career opportunities available in the Ambulatory Surgery Center setting. We understand that choosing a career path can be daunting, and events like MiCareerQuest provide invaluable exposure to the array of possibilities awaiting these young adults in the future. One of our most engaging activities involved letting students spin the wheel. When it landed on an injury, we provided hands-on experience in fixing said injury—an interactive way to showcase the exciting world of healthcare. We also had a fun race to see who could get the rubber gloves on the fastest, adding a bit of friendly competition to the day. Participating in MiCareerQuest was not just about showcasing our industry; it was about planting seeds in the minds of our future workforce. My management professor, Dawn Brackmann, assigned my group a project where we had to find an organization to tour. We also had to ask a couple of questions about the organization and how it is managed. We were lucky enough to spend yesterday afternoon with Lisa Pearson from Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan. We had a great visit and learned so much about OAM and how Lisa performs her job as Chief Operating Officer. Guidelines to avoid a muscle strain or back injury while shoveling snow include the following: Keep the back straight at all times. Lead with the hips, not the lower back, and push the chest out, pointing forward. Then, bend the knees and lift with the leg muscles, keeping the back straight at all times. Bent-handle shovels reduce the amount of bending required, as well as how far the person shoveling has to bend over. These shovels also reduce stress on the lower back by 16%
