District Manager Mary Schaeffer is thrilled to announce the grand opening of the new Orvis retail store in Columbia, SC! The store is led by the dynamic team of Store Manager Ellen Gordon and Fishing Manager Chase Gray. Ellen brings a wealth of experience to Orvis, having previously served as a Manager at Starbucks. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, her diverse background includes roles at Buckle, various insurance agencies, and even a stint as a kickboxing instructor. Ellen is passionate about ensuring every associate and customer has an exceptional #experience. A graduate of Texas A&M University, Ellen pursued her love for adventure by thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2021 with her boyfriend. They’ve recently welcomed a greyhound named Bo into their family and are strong advocates for local dog adoption agencies. In her free time, Ellen enjoys traveling, hiking, and exploring the great outdoors. Chase Gray joins us from Brookings Anglers in Cashiers, NC, where he guided and worked in their fly shop. Hailing from Walhalla, SC, and a graduate of Western Carolina University, Chase is a lifelong #angler with a deep passion for the outdoors. He has extensive knowledge of the diverse fisheries in the western Carolinas and the Congaree River system, and he’s excited to share his love for fly fishing with our customers. Outside of work, Chase enjoys hiking, skiing, road biking, and spending quality time with his wife and their three dogs—an American Brittany and two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, which Chase affectionately calls “his wife’s dogs.” We can’t wait for you to visit us at our new Columbia location and meet Ellen, Chase, and the rest of our team! #Orvis #ColumbiaSC #SouthCarolina #retail #newstore #fishing #flyfishing

Orvis Chief Enthusiast, Tom Rosenbauer is on a fishing trip this week. While away, he learned that his friend and legendary fly-fishing author John Geirach had passed away at the age of 78. In his honor, Tom asked us to post his last interview with John from May of 2023, and to share this with all of you. "John Gierach was one of the finest voices in fly fishing. He passed away suddenly last week. Always humble and kind, his writing never reached into navel-gazing, but he told great, honest, and funny stories and like all great writers, he never wasted a word. I once had the pleasure of spending a week sharing a cabin with him in Labrador, and he was exactly the man in person that he was in his writing. We will all miss him greatly.” - Philip Monahan #OneoftheBest

Iceland is a land of breathtaking wonders—from its unique language to the rugged landscapes carved by spectacular rivers and the countless waterfalls you can encounter in just one day. While fishing for sea-run brown trout with Fish Partner guides Kristján Rafnsson and Sindri Hlíðar Jónsson, Phil Monahan had the thrilling experience of landing a beautiful Atlantic salmon, fresh from the sea. It was the last week of July, and the salmon run had just begun. Initially, high and muddy rivers made conditions tough, but as the waters dropped and cleared, the fishing improved dramatically. Anglers eager to catch the peak of this incredible run can click the link in our story to learn more about Orvis Week at Battle Hill Lodge.

Tom Rosenbauer asks Melissa Ceren - Is Fly Fishing Really Good for your Mental Health? We often hear that fly fishing is great for mental health—it gets you outdoors, encourages problem-solving, and keeps you active throughout the day. But is fly fishing always beneficial for your mind? Can there be times when it actually worsens your mood? And what steps can you take to ensure a day on the water leaves you feeling refreshed? To explore this, Tom speaks with with Melissa Ceren, a fly-fishing guide and licensed therapist. They delve into the mental health benefits of fly fishing, while also considering its potential downsides. A fun and insightful conversation. #Orvis #fishing #flyfishing #mentalhealth #outdoors #mood
