About us

OSD is a group of interdisciplinary designers investigating the future of a sustainable planet through new hybrids of human and natural environments.  As the world changes in unprecedented ways, OSD challenges the siloed roles of Urban Design, Landscape Architecture and Architecture in order to create integrated built and natural environments. We have extensive expertise in coastal resiliency, public spaces, community engagement, and believe the best designed places are a result of highly collaborative union of all disciplines.

A resilient workplace. OSD’s master plan for this workforce campus, in collaboration with WeWork, addresses two fundamental needs of workplace survival: resilience in the face of changing climate, and resilience in the face of changing attitudes to work. In 2017 Hurricane Harvey shuttered this campus and brought destruction not seen before in Houston, forcing private property owners to upgrade to protect and mitigate against climate events. At the same time, workforce environments continue to be reshaped by changing attitudes to remote work, corporate structures, and expectations for employee wellbeing. Through the upgrade of underutilized landscapes, rooftops, and buildings, the project creates a nature-first, sponge-like environment that manages flood risks, and elevates workforce experience. Shagbark Pavilion is a waterfront folly born from the identity of the surrounding upstate New York landscape. Drawing inspiration from the sinuous forms and raw textures of the land–from towering Shagbark Hickories to rugged bluestone outcroppings–it embraces the artfulness of nature. As part of a master plan for a sprawling wooded estate, Shagbark Pavilion is woven into the fabric of the land, forming one of many destinations in a network of outdoor sculpture, overlooks, rambles, seating, and shelters. Crafted from locally sourced stone, the structure emerges organically from the ground. This project remains critically important today as we face inequality and social upheaval. As designers, we were challenged to make ideas physical, and make visitors challenge assumptions about familiar concepts. “A New World Image” is a traveling exhibition about the unveiling of the UN Human Rights treatise, and questioning the inevitability of Human Rights. Over 100 historic documents are sealed under impact-resistant glass, inviting visitors to discover up close the UN treatise, while evoking the fragility of our relationship with the concept of Human Rights. Beyond the archive, a landscape of towering columns invites visitors to navigate the ongoing debate: Are Human Rights a universal truth, or a contested ideal? Designed for global discourse, the exhibition is entirely modular—built for transport, and adaptable to any space. First exhibited in Copenhagen, the exhibition has traveled to New York, Ireland, Denmark, and Australia, challenging how we see the past and the future of Human Rights. The project was designed in collaboration with Columbia University ISHR; curators Eva Prag and Katrine Bregengaard; graphic designers Affaire Imaginaire, Alfons Hooikaas, Tim Gambell; the Danish Institute for Human Rights; and Det Kgl. Bibliotek | Royal Danish Library https://lnkd.in/gu7A-UP2 #OSD #ExhibitionDesign #HumanRights

“The small Arkansas city of Bentonville and neighboring towns have emerged in recent years as a collective hotbed of elevated architecture ... “  Congratulations to Walmart on the opening of their new home office, highlighting the continued architectural development in the area and exemplifying how structural design is tied to health and wellness. This message is increasingly evident in Bentonville through projects including our own medical education facility at Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (Polk Stanley Wilcox and OSD), along with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art’s expansion (Safdie Architects) and Heartland Whole Health Institute (Marlon Blackwell Architects).
