Maryam and her fellow youth plaintiffs are not only fighting to hold the EPA accountable for the climate pollution it allows, but fighting to be seen, heard, and protected. They have the right to a safe and livable climate. This is why Maryam submitted a declaration to the court in response to the EPA’s motion to dismiss. In a powerful declaration submitted to the court, Genesis v. EPA youth plaintiff Avroh explains that volunteering and climate activism isn’t enough when the EPA is discriminating against children by allowing life-threatening levels of climate pollution and discounting the economic value of their lives. When rights are being violated, it’s the court’s job to listen and act! The Genesis v. EPA youth plaintiffs are fighting for their right to be heard in court. Rather than protect children, the EPA has systematically disregarded the lives and futures of young people in favor of maintaining the status quo of fossil fuel reliance and climate pollution. The EPA’s actions discriminate against children and overlook how climate pollution disproportionately affects the younger generation.
