A Clean Hydrogen JU project which aims to remove scale as the limiting factor in the deployment of SOEL technologies.
About us
The objective of OUTFOX is to eliminate the scale restriction in the implementation of Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOEL) technologies and demonstrate their potential as the preferred option for producing green hydrogen. Through the integration of experimental findings up to the 80kW scale and the identification of optimal cell and system designs, OUTFOX plans to equip SOEL for large-scale industrial systems of over 100MW with a reduced Levelized Cost of Hydrogen of €2.7/kg H2 and suitability for mass manufacturing lines. The industrially driven consortium will pool its expertise in cell, stack, and module development, along with manufacturing and full system evaluation, to advance the maturity of SOEL and contribute to the objectives of the Clean Hydrogen JU SRIA. The overall sustainability will be enhanced by reducing overall material requirements, where OUTFOX will achieve current densities of at least 0.85 A/cm2 using cells that are 25% thinner than the current state-of-the-art cells. Scaling up will be approached from two angles: 1. Developing and validating cells with geometrical areas of up to 900 cm2 that are compatible with large-scale manufacturing techniques; and 2. Validating optimized design concepts up to the full module level for commercial scale implementation The partners will test high current density operation with reference scale (144 cm2), industrial scale (>300cm2), and next-generation (900cm2) cells in single repeating units, short stacks of 15 cells, and 80kW prototype systems, resulting in over 10,000h of SOEL operation. To provide comprehensive validation of the OUTFOX technology, 2 distinct 80 kW testing campaigns with 2 different stack configurations will be conducted at the Shell facilities in Amsterdam, with over 4000 operating hours in total. This will offer crucial data for designing a 100+ MW SOEL system, including module configuration and balance of plant requirements, enabling a multi-MW demonstration after the project's conclusion.

𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲—𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 Can green hydrogen scale without the right infrastructure? Producing green hydrogen is just part of the equation. The real challenge lies in building the infrastructure to store, transport, and distribute it efficiently. Unlike natural gas pipelines, hydrogen’s low energy density means storage tanks and transport networks need to be much larger and more advanced. 📈 Fun Fact: Industry estimates suggest that upgrading Europe’s pipeline network for hydrogen could cost over €𝟲𝟱 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. Solutions like hydrogen hubs and retrofitting existing natural gas pipelines are promising, but time and collaboration are critical. While green hydrogen has the potential to decarbonize industries and revolutionize energy systems, its cost remains a significant barrier. Despite dramatic advancements in electrolysis technology, green hydrogen still costs between $3–$6/kg, compared to just $1–$2/kg for grey hydrogen. The good news? Experts project costs to fall below $2/kg by 2030 in regions with abundant renewable energy. But to get there, we need: Greater investments in electrolyzer manufacturing. Scaled-up renewable energy infrastructure. More aggressive government policies to bridge the financial gap. SOEL and Green Hydrogen: Aligning Environmental and Social Objectives As the deployment of green hydrogen technologies like Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOEL) accelerates, addressing environmental concerns is essential—but so is ensuring that societal objectives are met. Public acceptance, awareness, and active participation are critical to the long-term success of hydrogen as a clean energy solution. From an environmental perspective, SOEL represents one of the most sustainable pathways for hydrogen production. By using renewable energy to split water, SOEL produces zero emissions, positioning it as a key tool in global efforts to combat climate change. A study by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimates that the hydrogen economy could meet 12% of global energy demand by 2050, helping reduce emissions in hard-to-decarbonize sectors like industry and transport. However, environmental sustainability alone won’t drive mass adoption—public perception and awareness are equally important. Research indicates that many communities are unfamiliar with hydrogen technologies or have safety concerns. Addressing these through public education campaigns and transparent communication is essential. By highlighting the role SOEL plays in reducing emissions and improving air quality, especially in industrial hubs, we can build greater public trust and support. Public participation in hydrogen projects, including pilot programs for hydrogen-powered transport or industrial applications, will further strengthen acceptance and ensure that green hydrogen has the social mandate needed for widespread adoption. OUTFOX is dedicated to aligning the environmental benefits of SOEL with societal goals. We believe that by fostering public trust, awareness, and participation, we can build a future where hydrogen plays a central role in the global energy transition—supported not just by industries, but by communities everywhere. #SOEL #HydrogenEconomy #PublicAwareness #GreenHydrogen #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #EnvironmentalImpact #PublicParticipation #OUTFOX

Can AI Accelerate the Rise of Green Hydrogen? In the race toward decarbonization, green hydrogen is positioned as a game-changer. But can artificial intelligence (AI) play a significant role in scaling its production, integration, and efficiency? Early indications suggest the answer is a resounding yes. Optimizing Production Processes AI is already making its mark in optimizing Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOEL) and other electrolyzer technologies. By analyzing large datasets, AI can improve energy efficiency, predict system performance, and reduce the operational costs of hydrogen production. For example, predictive maintenance powered by AI can minimize downtime, increasing the reliability of large-scale production plants. Smart Integration into Energy Systems AI enables better integration of green hydrogen into renewable energy grids by managing fluctuations in supply and demand. Through advanced forecasting, it can ensure that electrolyzers operate during peak renewable energy generation, maximizing efficiency while reducing costs. Driving Innovation Through R&D AI accelerates innovation by simulating chemical reactions and materials testing, speeding up the development of next-generation electrolyzers. These tools help identify more efficient and durable materials, critical for improving scalability and reducing the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). Scaling the Hydrogen Economy AI also supports the creation of hydrogen hubs, where production, storage, and transportation systems are coordinated. Machine learning models can optimize logistics, monitor environmental impact, and streamline operations, ensuring that green hydrogen becomes more economically viable. As green hydrogen rises to meet global energy demands, AI can be a supporting player and could help unlock the full potential of hydrogen as a clean, sustainable energy source. What role do you think AI will play in scaling green hydrogen? Let us know your thoughts! #GreenHydrogen #AIInnovation #EnergyTransition #SOEL #OUTFOX #HydrogenEconomy #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #ArtificialIntelligence
