Our founder, Amir Nathoo spoke on the Future of Learning podcast about why school should be: fun, individualized, and most importantly, at the choice of both learner and family. Leave cookie-cutter education in the past. Listen in here if you believe in customized education! https://lnkd.in/gNsSQC2z
I spoke with MacKenzie Price on the Future of Learning podcast about Outschool, the challenges with school and how we organize education, the need for system change, supporting neurodiversity and new school choice programs. Listen in here and I copied some notes below on my comments on neurodiversity: https://lnkd.in/g75s3e5k Every kid is different and their needs change with time. So every kid has unique learning needs which is why you need to provide tremendous breadth and options and choice in order to fulfill those needs. That is kind of obvious but is something that too often in education we don't really internalize and build towards. In our society we categorize certain kinds of unique learning needs and give them a name. We talk about gifted kids who spike in a particular area and are grades ahead. We talk about kids with learning difficulties such as ADD, ADHD, sensory processing issues. The great thing about online learning is you can more easily customize for those needs. For example in our early days we had a wonderful poetry class where the kids were very shy and found it difficult to engage in the subject matter in-person. But they could engage in the chat with online classes that drew them out. That example shows how platforms with our flexibility can serve those diagnosed or categorized unique learning needs. What's great about serving those communities is that everything we do to better serve those communities helps everyone because of this insight that every kid is unique and has unique learning needs.

Is unschooling the new school? According to Rolling Stone-- probably. The education system is broken, and parents are taking it upon themselves to forge a future where "going to school" is not a cookie-cutter experience. Your kid is unique-- shouldn't their education reflect that?
Kids learn best when their education is self-directed. That’s the radical truth behind unschooling. It’s still a very niche idea but when we founded Outschool it was inconceivable that Rolling Stone would cover the growing movement: https://lnkd.in/gcHkdVVR Unschooling is rising as part of the overall rise in homeschooling post pandemic. It’s also being powered by growing disillusionment with our current systems and institutions. What’s the point in socializing kids into our current society (by sending them to school) when it is so obviously broken? Todays radical ideas are the mainstreams of the future.

Do you think #AI has a place in education? We do. At Outschool, we're championing the integration of AI in education, contrasting with the cautious stance of many traditional educators. Yes, some fear AI could disrupt established methods, but many homeschoolers see it as a collaborative tool that enhances personalized learning, particularly for gifted and neurodiverse students. That said-- embracing AI doesn't mean replacing teachers. Instead, we think it can enhance their ability to provide differentiated, high-quality education. What do you think?
