As so many of us have been hard at work supporting partners and the field in navigating this moment, we also have some big transitions coming up as an organization: at the end of June, Rachel Brown, Over Zero’s founder and Executive Director, will be transitioning out of her role, ten years after the organization received its seed funding. As Rachel wrote on her personal LinkedIn: “I never expected to stay at Over Zero forever - my hope was always to build an organization that would outlive my tenure and outgrow my leadership. This work is needed now more than ever. And it’s a sign of the organization’s strength that I feel incredibly confident and excited to navigate this transition - because of our programs, partners, organizational knowledge and institutional sustainability, and most importantly, the incredible team I’ve had the fortune and honor to work with. I believe deeply in our team, our work, and our continued impact moving forward. While this was a challenging decision that I made with much reflection over the past year, I feel no small measure of excitement to focus on recruiting a new Executive Director that can support Over Zero and its growth and impact in this critical moment.” In April, Samantha Owens, Over Zero’s Director of Programs, will also be transitioning out of her role after seven years of incredible contributions to Over Zero’s work, growth, and strategy. Sam will be coming back to Over Zero in July in a part-time Senior Advisor role, where she’ll continue to support our Programs team. As Sam wrote: “I have loved my time at OZ and believe that this work is needed as much– if not more– than ever. The team (which is now a team of 15!) is a team of leaders, thinkers, and doers, and, while we are in a moment of deep challenges and uncertainty, their vision for carrying our work forward fills me with hope.” We are deeply grateful for the many contributions that Rachel and Sam have made to this organization. We have plans in place to manage these transitions, including bringing on Evelyn Thornton as Interim Managing Director. We are incredibly lucky to get to work with someone with her depth of knowledge and experience. And we are, as always, incredibly grateful for our many partners, collaborators, and supporters in this work.
Over Zero
Civic and Social Organizations
Supporting leaders and communities to prevent, resist, and rise above identity-based violence.
About us
Over Zero was founded in response to the global need to counteract and prevent identity-based violence and other forms of group-targeted harm. We emerged as an outgrowth of Sisi ni Amani International, an organization founded to strengthen local violence prevention efforts through leveraging communication-based tools. Our interdisciplinary and cross-sector approach contributes to the broader field of identity-based violence prevention. Over Zero’s programming is focused on the United States, Central Europe, and engagement with the wider atrocity prevention field. Our work is rooted in a commitment to field-building: developing the connective tissue, trust, and shared understanding across actors, approaches, disciplines, and geographies that are facing common issues or challenges. Our model supports and convenes diverse stakeholders, from local NGOs to community leaders and organizers from directly affected communities, researchers, and philanthropy; draws on their perspectives and knowledge; supports them in leveraging their unique platforms and skills; and engages them in collective problem-solving and strategy design. We also support high-impact organizations and networks in programmatic design and evaluation, and advise leaders and institutions that influence the field, including philanthropy. Underlying this work is a commitment to cutting-edge, interdisciplinary and cross-sector research that is both responsive to real-world needs and can enhance practical responses to conflict risks.

As we approach Pride month, Over Zero has released a new report: Decoding LGBTQ Scapegoating. This report explores the connection between two escalating crises: the systematic targeting of LGBTQ communities and democratic backsliding worldwide. It examines how the rhetorical, political, and physical attacks targeting the LGBTQ community are, in addition to a critical rights issue, a central component of the authoritarian playbook, cloaking themselves as culture war politics as usual. LGBTQ scapegoating is not random. It is not a natural consequence of polarization or an expected backlash to rights advancements, but rather a strategy to deepen divisions and erode democracy. You can find the report, an abridged version, and a snapshot of how this is unfolding in the U.S. here: https://lnkd.in/eCi_Rs6d Very grateful to have partnered with Seth Flaxman on developing this.
