  • This week, Nicole Campbell & I had the chance to visit a few prospective partner schools in Brooklyn. On our student-led tour, we had the chance to see the wonderful ways that the staff builds culture and community in the school. In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, they hung this gorgeous tapestry with a collage of Spanish-speaking countries written into a woman’s Afro. We also enjoyed a library filled with identity affirming books celebrating stories of the Latinx community. At Ownership is the Future, we recognize and honor the countless intellectual and cultural contributions of the Latinx community. As New Yorkers, we celebrate the multiple representations of that identity that come in various skin tones, accents and cultural traditions. While Afrolatinx communities have been historically overlooked, we are inspired for the rise in discourse and content that centers that dynamic experience. Thank you to our amazing partner schools for taking the time to show our students that their identities matter! • Why should high school students pursue entrepreneurship? For many students, the opportunity to own and create something at a young age is a significant responsibility. Initially, they’re often amazed at what they can produce by the end of the year. By that time, they feel a profound sense of pride in knowing they’ve grown an idea from their minds and released it into the world. As a program instructor, witnessing this growth and transformation is what keeps me coming back. Hearing students say, "I am so proud of myself!" and "I can't believe I did that!" reinforces the value of programs like Ownership is the Future, far beyond high school graduation. Giving students the space and structure to tap into their power early on proves that they can achieve great things again and again. - Addy Salau Check out this article on the top reasons why high school students should consider entrepreneurship below! • According to the 2021 Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, only 6% of Black adults in the U.S. earned $100,000 or more annually. This small percentage is alarming, especially considering inflation, the growing wealth gap, and layoffs in a shifting global economy. At Ownership, our theory of change envisions students pursuing diverse post-secondary opportunities to secure the futures they deserve. As we celebrate Black Business Month, we're committed to equipping youth with the skills and mindsets needed to compete in the 21st century. We urgently need to expose our students to income-generating opportunities early, giving them the runway to create, test, learn, and succeed. If this resonates with you, join our community of supporters and mentors helping our students achieve their goals!
