In January 2023, Oxus Society launched the Kazakhstan Futures program in partnership with funding from the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan, a year-long program and workshops exploring how Kazakhstan’s future socio-economic challenges and opportunities may evolve by 2050. Topics included infrastructure development, climate resilience, human capital development, and foreign direct investment climate. The program brought together 26 experts from Kazakhstan and the United States. Program activities, including a series of reports, news briefings, public events, and presentations, involved a diverse group of over 100 experts, private-sector, and government stakeholders in Kazakhstan. The program was implemented in two phases culminating in public events starting in Phase One in September 2023 and then in April 2024 for Phase Two. We discussed the following questions: • What are the prospects for decarbonization in Kazakhstan? What factors are inhibiting this? • What is the potential for a transition to green energy? • How can we ensure the green transition provides benefits to all Kazakhs? • What role might critical minerals play in Kazakhstan’s future economy? • How can the benefits of economic growth be more evenly distributed throughout society and in different regions of the country? • How can Kazakhstan improve its investment climate? • How can Kazakhstan provide jobs for its growing population? • How can human capital be improved? • What role can education play in this? • How can Kazakhstan harness the AI revolution? Here we summarize the takeaways: https://lnkd.in/eQVhRjET Albina Tortbayeva Mereke Tanaguzova Madina Junussova Aigul Beimisheva Yerkebulan Sairambay Maximilian Hess Zhanibek Arynov Aizada Nuriddenova Zarina Adambussinova

As part of our Kazakhstan Futures program funded by the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan we gathered together 23 experts from Kazakhstan and the US to discuss the country's challenges and opportunities. In this report, Albina Tortbayeva Aigul Beimisheva Mereke Tanaguzova Madina Junussova discuss three scenarios titled “no change, realistic, and optimistic” relating to the potential socio-economic development of Kazakhstan up to 2050 and the key factors and risks shaping the likelihood of these different outcomes unfolding. They highlight the threats, opportunities, and challenges ahead in a constantly evolving and uncertain geopolitical context. https://lnkd.in/gQ_GJX6R

Zhanibek Arynov Aizada Nuriddenova (with help from Maria Blackwood) have written an important new research paper on Central Asian regionalism. In the report, they introduce their original dataset of meeting between presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers of Central Asia in 2015, 2019, 2022 and 2023. The dataset reveals a marked shift in the dynamics of regional relations, with a significant increase in the number of high-level interactions and a move toward more substantive forms of engagement. At the same time, most recorded intra-regional interactions occurred on a bilateral basis, rather than involving more than two Central Asian states. This report is published as part of the “Kazakhstan Futures Program” with financial support from the Public Affairs Section at the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan. https://lnkd.in/gd2sjny9

The transformative impact of the decarbonization agenda is often underestimated, necessitating significant changes across all aspects of our economies. This is particularly relevant for Kazakhstan, which anticipates requiring around $4 trillion, including an additional $610 billion in investment by 2060. Remarkably, approximately 90-95% of this investment is expected to come from private, domestic, and international sources. Numerous questions arise from this monumental task. What is the overarching plan? What role does academia play in this transition? And how can sustainability strategies benefit governments, markets, and society at large? My approach is rather down to the ground - promote a robust intrument to guide various players through by means of ESGQ Rating Agency methodology and offer academic and commercial consultancy. Thank you Bakhyt Yessekina, Chingiz Kanapyanov for your references, Madina Junussova and Mira Beisenova for trust, and Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs generally for the opportunity to share thoughts and insights. Bradley Jardine honoured to meet and my wishes for your further endeavours in Central Asia! Jessica Neafie, PhD. I believe your students at Назарбаев Университет are recieving the essence of good education. Warm regards to all participants!
