The most significant challenge I have found in organizations is the failure to engage in relationship building. This is partly due to the false belief that our personal self and professional self are different--they are not. It is also due to the practice of leadership not encouraging this. I am not talking about intimate relationships. It is vital that people learn about each other in order to use strengths most effectively and to trust enough to ask for help when it is needed. This is at the core of what I teach in my classes. I have been at this for over forty years and the trend is not getting any better. We need relational leadership.
