Nicole's journey being deaf has been a testament to her resilience and determination. Born with a moderate-severe hearing loss, she has navigated a world that is often designed for those with full hearing capabilities. From a young age, Nicole learned to rely on her other senses to engage with her surroundings, developing an acute awareness of visual and tactile cues that most take for granted. She became fluent in American Sign Language, using her hands and facial expressions to communicate fluidly with the Deaf community. As Nicole grew older, she faced the unique challenges of being deaf in an increasingly digital age. Now as a mother, Nicole continues to be a trailblazer, using her experiences to educate others and champion accessibility. She speaks openly about the joys and frustrations of navigating a hearing world, inspiring those around her to be more mindful and empathetic. Nicole's story is a powerful reminder that deafness does not have to be a barrier to success - with the right support and self-advocacy, individuals can thrive and achieve their dreams, regardless of their physical or sensory differences.

👂To conclude Deaf Awareness Month, we are hosting a Deaf Awareness Week to provide guidance on extending this awareness and advocacy beyond just this month. Please join us as we offer valuable insights from one of our beloved Peak to Peak friends, Nicole Stewart-Dunn. We will address sign language myths, discuss ways to be supportive and explore deaf struggles that may often be overlooked. This is a time to celebrate the deaf and hard-of-hearing community and promote understanding of their unique experiences and needs. As allies, it's crucial that we approach this topic with sensitivity and respect. Avoid using outdated or offensive terms like "hearing impaired" - the preferred language is "deaf" or "hard-of-hearing." When interacting with someone who is deaf, make eye contact, speak clearly (but don't shout), and be patient if they need to read your lips or use an interpreter. Deaf culture has its own rich history, traditions, and community, so take the time to educate yourself. Learn basic sign language phrases, attend local events hosted by deaf organizations, and amplify deaf voices and perspectives on social media. Most importantly, remember that deaf individuals are just as capable and deserving of full inclusion in society. Let's commit to dismantling ableist attitudes, advocating for accessibility, and uplifting the deaf community. With open hearts and minds, we can build a more accessible, equitable world for all.

Rise and shine, parents! 🌞 Did you know that breakfast is the most important meal of day for your little ones? A healthy breakfast provides them with the energy they need to kickstart their day and perform better in school! So, let’s make mealtime and nutritious for the whole family! Here are some ways to get your child more involved in mealtime: 1. Offer a variety healthy options: Include a mix of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins in the food you offer. 2. Keep it simple: Offer two or three options at a time to avoid overwhelming your child. 3. Let them choose: Allow your child to make the final decision on what they want to eat. This can help them feel more in control and invested in their meal. 4. Be patient: It may take some time for your child to get used to making their own choices, so be patient and keep offering healthy options. 5. Meal Prep: Having kids help with cooking can have numerous benefits. It can help them develop important life skills, such as following directions, measuring ingredients, and problem-solving. Additionally, it can encourage them to try new foods and develop healthy eating habits. 6. Eat Together: Having breakfast together to talk about daily plans can promote language development, healthy eating, and stronger family bonds. With these tips, you can make breakfast a family affair that your kids will look forward to every morning! 🍳🥞🍓 Don’t forget to share your breakfast ideas with us. Let’s get cooking and make breakfast the best meal of the day!
