Katie Harkin, MPA highlights five lessons we learned over the past 10 years of our investment in Starting Smart and Strong! Check them out below ⬇️
I’m pleased to share a blog that highlights five lessons learned over the past 10 years of The David and Lucile Packard Foundation’s investment in Starting Smart and Strong. These lessons reflect what we’ve learned from our attempts to share power and co-create with three communities working to build strong early learning systems. We made some mistakes along the way and learned a lot in the process. Our hope in sharing these lessons is that they can inform and inspire other funders and grantees to embrace these strategies in their own social change work. Many thanks to Northern California Grantmakers for providing a platform to share what we’ve learned. I’m including a preview of the lessons below and a link to the blog in the comments. For those with experience co-creating or working to share and shift power in philanthropy, what additional lessons would to add to this list? 1️⃣ Be patient. It takes time to build trust. 2️⃣ Put all of your cards on the table. 3️⃣ It will get messy, and that’s the point. 4️⃣ Let the community lead. 5️⃣ Practice! Embracing power sharing leads to more, and more effective, power sharing.

Celebrating a decade of impact! 🎉 Ten years ago, the Packard Foundation launched the Starting Smart and Strong initiative to support early childhood development in Oakland, Fresno, and the Franklin-McKinley School District in East San Jose. We sat down with Katie Harkin, MPA, Associate Program Officer at the Foundation, along with Clare Nolan, Co-Executive Director of Engage R+D, and Pilar Mendoza, Managing Director, from Engage R+D to hear about what they learned, how their approach evolved, and what other funders and evaluators might learn from Starting Smart and Strong. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/g27QAWrA

Every young child should be able to grow up healthy and ready for kindergarten. Over the past 10 years, we invested in Starting Smart and Strong to develop and test innovations to support parents, caregivers, and educators to ensure that this is true for every young child living in Fresno, Oakland, and East San Jose.
