Every human being deserves fair pay, respect, and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully. Integrated employment not only empowers people with disabilities to earn competitive wages but also enriches our workplaces and communities. Read our national organization, National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities, new position statement on phasing out sub-minimum wages below: #EndSubMinimumWages #DisabilityRights #DisabilityEmployment
The work to make competitive integrated employment a reality for all people with developmental disabilities is a year-round effort. As NDEAM wraps up, NACDD releases its official position statement on ending sub-minimum wages under the unjust Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) across the nation. This outdated provision, enacted in 1938, allows employers to pay workers with disabilities less than the federal minimum wage, perpetuating a system of segregation, exploitation, and limited opportunity. One of our State Plan objectives is to help stop the school-to-prison pipeline by reducing suspensions and expulsions of Black and Brown students with developmental disabilities. We support proven and promising approaches starting in early education. Currently we fund two projects focused on this goal. This month the American Academy of Pediatrics issued its own Policy Statement on School Suspension and Expulsions. Read their whole statement here: https://lnkd.in/e3ta_hQP
