In 2023, a student at the University of California used the NHPD for their thesis to earn a Master of Urban and Regional Planning. They analyzed neighborhood characteristics of properties assisted by the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program. 🏢 The Urban Institute also leverages the NHPD. In their recent report, "Unifying Upzoning with Affordable Housing Production Strategies," they used NHPD data to provide concrete evidence on zoning limitations affecting subsidized housing construction. 📊 📈 Created in 2012 by Public and Affordable Housing Research Corporation and the National Low Income Housing Coalition, the NHPD is the first nationwide, de-duplicated, property-level database of federally assisted housing properties. Fresno Housing developed its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Framework in 2022 to undo past harm and build up marginalized communities. 🌍🤝 📋 One strategy identified in Fresno's framework was developing a supplier diversity program to encourage a diverse pool of vendors to apply, increasing the competition of bids. The database provides evidence-based insights to help advocates build compelling cases for the need for affordable housing in specific regions. 📊 Beyond the database, the NHPD website offers various resources, including the Affordable Housing Preservation Toolkit. This toolkit assists local advocates and planners in understanding their affordable housing stock, assessing preservation risks, and developing strategies to enhance local housing preservation efforts. 🛠️ Available for all 50 states and the largest 50 metro areas across the country, it is a crucial tool for advocacy. As 327,565 U.S. homes are set to lose affordability restrictions by 2026, communities need to act to create and preserve affordable housing. The National Housing Preservation Database (NHPD) is a unique resource in the effort to keep families stably housed and neighborhoods strong. 📅 Launched in 2012, the NHPD is today used by thousands of affordable housing stakeholders, including government agencies, community development organizations, legal aid organizations, advocates, researchers, and lower-income families.
