The Pakistan Navy has conducted a successful flight test of an indigenously developed ship-launched ballistic missile, the Directorate General Public Relations (Navy) said in a press release on Monday. Air pollution in Lahore soared on Saturday more than 80 times over the level deemed acceptable by the World Health Organisation (WHO), with an official calling it a record high. For days, Lahore has been enveloped by smog, a mix of fog and pollutants caused by low-grade diesel fumes, smoke from seasonal agricultural burning and winter cooling. The level of deadly PM2.5 pollutants — fine particulate matter in the air that causes the most damage to health — peaked at 1,067, before dropping to around 300 in the morning, with anything above 10 considered unhealthy by the WHO. “We have never reached a level of 1,000,” Jahangir Anwar, a senior environmental protection official in Lahore told AFP. #airpollution #lahore #smog #pakistan

Pakistan’s first multi-mission satellite, PAKSAT-MM1, has successfully completed testing and is now operational, marking a significant milestone in the country’s space and digital development. Chairman of SUPARCO, Muhammad Yousuf Khan, praised the team behind PAKSAT-MM1, describing the satellite as a critical tool for socio-economic development and for boosting Pakistan’s presence in the global space industry. “PAKSAT-MM1 will serve unconnected regions with services like DTH, community internet, tele-education, and tele-medicine,” Khan added, inviting local industries to collaborate on future space-related initiatives. Expected to remain operational for over 15 years, PAKSAT-MM1 offers broadband, VSAT connectivity, and other services, contributing to Pakistan’s ambition of becoming a digitally empowered nation. International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has ranked Pakistan (score 96.69/100) among top tier countries for cybersecurity in 2024. Out of a maximum score of 20, Pakistan received 20 for legal measures, 18.21 for technical measures, 20 for organization measures, 20 for capacity development and 18.48 for cooperative measures, according to the Global Cybersecurity Index 2024 report released by the ITU. Pakistan’s tier one cybersecurity ranking is a big improvement from its 79th rank (score 64.88 from 100) it got in the cybersecurity ranking by the ITU in 2020. Four years ago, Pakistan scored 15.97 on legal measures, 12.26 on technical measures, 11.01 on organizational measures, 17.25 on capacity development and 8.38 on cooperative measures. Increasing penetration and rapid growth of the Internet user base in Pakistan has brought in a lot of user complaints of bullying and fraud, necessitating government action, including new legislation and capacity building to fight cyber crimes. Lt Gen (Retd) Moazzam Ejaz (Rector of the National University of Technology) has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Technology Council (NTC), as per the Chairman HEC, the controlling authority of NTC on August 6, 2024. The appointment is set to last for a period of four years, commencing from July 29, 2024. Lt Gen Ejaz will not receive a salary or additional benefits for his role as Chairperson. Instead, he will be eligible for an honorarium and allowances as determined by the Council’s regulations.
