𝐑𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: Addressing Alzheimer's In The Glades 𝐁𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐚 𝗪𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐞, 𝐏𝐡𝐃, 𝐑𝐍, 𝐏𝐇𝐍𝐀-𝐁𝐂, 𝐂𝐍𝐄 Associate Professor, Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at FAU With grassroots sponsorship from Healthier Glades, a Palm Health Foundation initiative, a team of faith-based health educators and community providers is raising awareness of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in western Palm Beach County. This rural area faces heightened risks for these conditions due to preventable factors. Launched by Dr. Lisa Wiese of FAU in 2017 and now led by 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐈𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥, 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 hosts monthly health outreaches with local organizations. These efforts have increased diverse community participation, influenced research and treatment protocols, and attracted federal funding. Notably, a $4.1M NIH grant is supporting a five-year brain health study with residents aged 45+ in the Lake Okeechobee region. The project integrates cutting-edge methods like digital literacy training for seniors, artificial intelligence-driven dementia risk detection, and chair yoga. Dr. Wiese credits 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧'𝐬 support for advancing brain health in these underserved communities.
