Who would have thought I’d be teaching 14x Olympian Katie Ledecky about what I do at work every day? It was such a pleasure to have her, and students from Washoe County, at the #Gigafactory earlier this month to learn about how our batteries are made! She’s such an inspiration to our future #STEM leaders! Panasonic Energy of North America

The demand for STEM workers is rapidly growing and outpacing the production of STEM degrees. But without early access and exposure to STEM education and related careers, students are denied opportunities to gain understanding and interest in educational and occupational fields due to issues including underfunding, a lack of updated resources and training, and a shortage of qualified STEM teachers. In efforts to bridge this gap, last week Olympian and #TeamPanasonic’s Katie Ledecky joined us at the Gigafactory for a field trip, bringing STEM Forward’s Virtual Field Trip program with her in-person for the first time. Students and teachers from across Washoe County, Nevada participated in a hands-on activity with Katie, where they learned about our innovative battery making process as they toured the facility. Following the field trip, we hosted a STEAM education panel on career readiness and workforce development at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno. While we are working toward electrifying the future with EVs, Panasonic Energy of North America is also focused on supporting STEM curriculum, career readiness and workforce development for high school and college students. STEM Forward’s Virtual Field Trip program and opportunities to engage with our area youth are just one step in the right direction. Panasonic North America is proud to have teamed up with Discovery Education and Katie Ledecky to help create a more sustainable environment for all.
