Ensuring a future for wild cats and the vast landscapes on which they depend.
About us
Founded in 2006, Panthera is devoted to the conservation of the world’s 40 species of wild cats and the vast ecosystems they inhabit. Our team of biologists, data scientists, law enforcement experts and wild cat advocates studies and protects the seven species of big cats: cheetahs, jaguars, leopards, lions, pumas, snow leopards and tigers. Panthera also creates targeted conservation strategies for the world’s most threatened and overlooked small cats. With our supporters around the world, we inform the public about the plight of wild cats, work closely with communities living alongside these iconic species, protect wild cats and their prey from poaching, fight the illegal wildlife trade and safeguard the precious landscapes wild cats need to survive. If you love wild cats, then you’re in our pride. Welcome to the movement to protect these captivating creatures and secure them for future generations. Visit panthera.org. Did you know that leopards inhabit north western Thailand? Despite similarities to their African relatives, this Asian species prey upon a completely different set of animals endemic to area. So what's in a leopard's stomach in Thailand? The bulk of its diet are ungulate (or hooved) animals like the Indian muntjac, Indian wild boar, Chinese coral and the Indochinese hog deer. Surprisingly, 5% of the leopard's diet is the Malayan porcupine! While Latin America's #SelfieSundaySpecies like jaguars and pumas can find momentary peace in a tranquil forest clearing and sit in front of a remote camera, they often face conflict with farmers over livestock predation. To mitigate this and promote #coexistence, Panthera Costa Rica works to build carnivore-proof fences and educate rural communities about the importance of living with wild cats. In 2023, we established a cooperation agreement with Costa Rica's Livestock Development Corporation to address cases of predation and provide training to farmers about the ecological and cultural importance of wild cats. ⚖️ Jaguar sizes differ dramatically from region to region. Male jaguars in Central America weigh — on average, 56 kg or 124 lbs — only about half of what male jaguars average in Venezuela (104 kg or 230 lbs). To put that in perspective, males in Belize have an average weight about as much as: 🐾 The largest of cheetahs 🙀 Two large Eurasian lynxes Males in Venezuela can weigh about as much as: 🦁 Slightly less than the smallest of female lions 🐆 Almost three times the smallest of male leopards Panthera actively works in 5 countries in Latin America — and supports projects and partnerships in 5 other countries — in order to conserve wild cats along the Jaguar Corridor. While remote cameras often capture images of wildlife, it's funny to see wildlife capture a remote camera. This curious lion in South Africa knows the importance of remote cameras and how they are vital for conservation efforts. With thousands set up around the world, these cameras help us conduct long-term studies on species like clouded leopards in Malaysia, tigers in Thailand, jaguars in Costa Rica and lions across Senegal. Want to know about our carnivore studies in Senegal?
