Papercraft Miracles is an eco-friendly handmade paper company specializing in weddings, events & gifts.

About us

Papercraft Miracles is an eco-friendly handmade paper company specializing in weddings, events and gifts. Crafting custom made items is what they do best, incorporating extra special details to make each order one-of-a-kind. The Papercraft Miracles studio is located in the heart of the Black Rock neighborhood in Buffalo, NY and all items are made in-house. We are also an eco-friendly business. The studio uses reclaimed and solar-heated water whenever possible, and since fall 2016, our entire studio has been solar powered. We encourage our customers to purchase our 100% recycled handmade paper and we also create many types of plantable seed paper products that will grow flowers, vegetables and herbs when planted in the ground. Many of our paper products are also created using plants grown in our gardens. Whether you are planning an extravagant wedding, looking for a unique gift or just want a few thank-you cards, they are committed to their customers and their satisfaction. Each piece is created with love and little bit of magic. Janna Willoughby-Lohr is the owner and artist behind Papercraft Miracles, where she has created handmade books, stationery and paper creations for everyday use and special occasions since 2003. Janna studied bookbinding and paper arts at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC. She has been honing her skills for over 15 years and has since taken the business full-time. In July 2018, she won the Ignite Buffalo grant from 43North and Facebook and Papercraft Miracles now has a team of three employees. In her own words, Janna states the reason she’s so dedicated to her work: “There’s just something about handling paper that sends me to the moon and brings me back to earth at the same time. That feeling is miraculous to me. I aim to instill that sense of wonder into each piece that I create, because we can all use a little miracle now and then.”

It’s amazing how a little switch in perspective can be the difference in having hope…or not having it. And that’s my main goal in life…to affect positive change in the world…through art…by intentionally causing that switch in perspective that brings about hope where there wasn’t any before. Why do you create? How do you bring about hope in your life? In the lives of others? Looking to make your passion into a business or know someone who is? Pre-sales are live for my course, The Art of Business & The Business of Art! Link in the comments. ❤️

One of the things that is most important to me as an artist is for the next generation of artists and entrepreneurs to have pathways to the same type of success that I have reached here at Papercraft Miracles. I have a lot of young artists and entrepreneurs who follow me here, and it’s important to me that I pave the way for their success. And so, I am in the process of creating an online course called: “The Art of Business and the Business of Art” that not only tells the story of how I built my business, but gives YOU all of the tools you need to do it for yourself. I am currently pre-selling the course for $250, which is almost HALF-OFF what the price will be post-launch. The course includes THE spreadsheets, budgeting tools, marketing templates, and so much more that I PERSONALLY USE every single day. So if you or someone you love would benefit from learning the business behind the art, click the link: https://zurl.co/1urB #artbusiness #makersgonnamake #artistsoninstagram #smallbusiness #artwork #artgallery #contemporaryart #artoftheday #artofbusiness #businessofart #arted #businessed #MBA #entrepreneurs #entrepreneurlife #success #businessowner #entrepreneurship

Nine years ago, I went back to work in the office after having my first baby. He was 3 months old, exclusively breastfed, and I had struggled so hard to pump enough extra milk to make a stash in my freezer for him. I had initially worked out a plan with my employer to allow me to work 2 days in the office and 2 days from home and I had purchased my own computer and programs to be able to do the same job from my house. And when I went back, I had to fight for a private space to pump milk (which they did provide me, but had not provided for another nursing mom previously) and I had to take pumping breaks every 2 hours (and over my lunch break) to make sure I could keep my supply up. Because I had to take that time to pump, there was no longer any community for me during my work day…I was isolated in a supply closet with my boss’s wine fridge, hoping no one tried to come in while I sat there hooked up to a machine with my top off. And even though I still did the same amount of work that I had done before I had a baby, even though I had invested my own money into the equipment I would need to do my job remotely, even though I stayed later to make up for the time I spent pumping in the office…someone complained to my supervisor that I “got to work from home when no one else did” and that I was “never at my desk” on the days I was in the office. They told me that I had to “either come back into the office full time or figure something else out”. I told them that they didn’t pay me enough to cover healthcare and daycare and it didn’t make sense to work my ass off to come home with negative dollars and pay someone else to raise my kid…so I was forced to quit. It was terrifying to not have a paycheck or health insurance, especially since we had a huge mortgage and the added expenses of a new baby. But my husband said, “We’ll figure it out. Just stay home and do your book thing.” I had been running PCM as a side gig for 3 years as that point but it was VERY part time. But for the first time since dreaming up this company 13 years earlier, I didn’t have to go work on someone else’s dream every day. And that is how I ended up doing what I love full-time.

SO EXCITED to announce that my company is FINALLY certified as a bona-fide Women Owned Business Enterprise in Buffalo/Erie County!! I have had this on my goal list since 2019 and after years of putting it off, I made it a priority to get my application info together and submitted this year and I got it done! As a person with ADHD, somethings like gathering paperwork, filling out applications etc can be next to impossible to do as there are SO many steps to follow and it is easy to lose focus and get off track. Super proud of myself for taking the time, the energy and the focus and getting this done. Next up…New York State! Huge thanks to Bailey Brouillard at the SBDC and my Shift/Co, Public Benefit Corporation Power Team of 🔥Meshell R Baker🔥 and Christine E.B. Howard for helping me to stay on track with this goal this year!

One of the ways that Papercraft miracles operates in a sustainable way is by creating paper and other products using waste materials from other companies and organizations. Recently, we partnered with Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy to create paper using invasive plants they were removing from the parks. We are really excited to share this video of the process and to be teaching a Papermaking workshop at Martin Luther King Park this coming Sunday, July 21 from 10 AM until the paper pulp runs out. Hope to see you there making paper. https://lnkd.in/egFaiNS3

    Divide your irises y’all. Divide.

View profile for Janna Willoughby-Lohr, graphic

Founder & Lead Artist at Papercraft Miracles

I want to talk about dividing. I got this train of thinking when I was out in my garden, finally taking the time to deal with my multitude of irises that needed to be divided. It’s apparently way too easy to grow irises because I got a couple of plastic grocery bags full in 2018 and today I have HUNDREDS of irises in my one garden bed. I have dug some out and moved them in down to another area and then moved some along the back of the bed but this year all those areas had so many irises that there was very little room for other plants. And while irises are gorgeous flowers they even start to crowd each other out and the big, tall, heavy flowers fall over into the dirt. Not to mention, they only last a few weeks and then they’re just leaves all summer. So you really want to have room for other flowers. My point is this. When you have something that is beautiful but also leaves little room for other “flowers” in your life, it’s time to do some digging. Get out your shovel and divide your irises. Dig out the whole clump. Break apart the rhizomes, check them for rot, dead roots and holes. Get rid of any that aren’t healthy and also ones that have a flower stalk because they won’t flower again. Then trim the leaves down to look like a little short fan. Trimming back to only the essentials takes the weight off the roots so they can better dig back into the soil, reestablish themselves and thrive again in the future. Are you picking up what I’m putting down? Give your soul room to reestablish itself in the soil of your life. Get back to the essentials and let go of leaves that no longer serve you. And when you have more irises than you have good, open soil in the sun? Post them for free on Facebook marketplace and people will race over to come get them. Divide your irises, y’all. Divide.
