When Barack Obama was a young senator running for President, he asked his campaign treasurer and long-time friend, Marty Nesbitt, “what’s the most significant thing I can do for young men of color as president”? Without skipping a beat, Marty responded, “well Barack, the most important thing you can do is win”. This story has stuck with me ever since. We often have big grandiose visions for our impact and our legacies. But what I took away from that anecdote was, the most important thing we can do on our journeys towards something great, is taking the first step. The most important thing we can do is throw our hat in the ring. When I started Parity, I had big visions of transforming whole blocks, neighborhoods, cities, a nation. And while that’s still my goal, I’ve had to remind myself that simply being on the journey is the win. The fact that I’m trying to tackle something so incredibly hard, *is* the win. My work is helping to reframe how we view Black neighborhoods and Black wealth in real time. It’s with that said that I’m so incredibly humbled and honored to be recognized as an Obama Foundation Fellow, and to have the support of such an amazing organization on my journey. This will only deepen the foundational support I've received as a fellow with Ashoka, JPMorganChase, Nathan Cummings Foundation, and so many others. If you've been following me, you know that at Parity we're transforming derelict historic homes in West Baltimore into stunning architectural masterpieces that can be passed down to the next 10 generations.
