Our latest "Signs of Progress" report -- which tracks NYC’s economic health -- reveals that strong topline economic conditions are undermined by signs of distress among disadvantaged populations who are increasingly reliant on public assistance. Additional highlights: - Private sector employment hit a record high 4.2 million jobs in June 2024 despite a slowdown in job growth through the first half of 2024. The health care sector accounted for 99% of private sector job growth in the first six months of the year. - New York City is now home to 183,000 small businesses—1,000 more than pre-pandemic. - New York City business and consumer sentiment remains above the national average. - Rebounding international travel increased passenger volumes at New York regional airports to the busiest first half of a year in history with 71 million passengers served. - Newly released data shows public school enrollment increased for the first time since 2016 in the 2023-2024 school year, although at least one analysis projects future declines. Meet Cindy Cohen, principal at KPMG US who helped organize this year's Community Impact Day event in NYC at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall. KPMG joined forces with NYC Department for the Aging to present older New Yorkers with information on the department’s Friendly Visiting Program. Afterwards, each older adult in attendance paired up with a KPMG employee volunteer to shop at a local farmers market, using $25 in coupons from the Farmers Market Nutrition Program and a bonus $25 matched by KPMG. #welovenyc #NewYork #CommunityImpactDay https://lnkd.in/e4mYAvWn

Excellent piece by Partnership for New York City alum Natalia Quintero on the power of public infrastructure ⬇️
Experiencing great public infrastructure is one of life’s great joys. Many New Yorkers understand the expansive feeling of walking into Grand Central Station, cycling across the West Side Highway, or strolling over the Brooklyn Bridge. Beautiful infrastructure is life-affirming because it serves as a visual testament of public interest prioritized and executed with excellence. Revisiting Naoshima in Japan this week for the first time since 2015, I was struck by the bold vision and profound impact of the island’s iconic design, which stands as a radical act of regional activism.
