Building new digital products and services for healthcare starts with the understanding that you're not solving technology problems, your solving people problems. When you're not feeling well or suffer from a chronic condition, those people problems only get worse. • Is it easy enough for people to use without help? • Is the solution accessible enough to install, operate, and troubleshoot? • Will user adoption be high enough to meet CPT code thresholds for reimbursement? When Andrew Aertker of PatchRx decided to do something about medication non-adherence. He and his co-founder saw that patients were putting themselves at risk by not adhering to their medication schedule. On their journey to understand the issue they learned a lot about the people problems and like an onion, comes in layers. Adding in a hardware component that remotely collects behavioral data and sends it to remote providers and care teams is next-level stuff. Each of these groups of people that are involved in the process has their own set of people-problems you need to understand across multiple touch points. • Does your solution create value or create more work? • Is there a low-tech alternative? • Can the digital solution improve on it? • Who gets access to the data? • What kind of automation and workflows will you need? • Will they be able to make informed decisions based on the data? • Will it talk with my ____ EHR (electronic health records) software? (see comments) Its inspiring to learn about digital solutions that stick with it and put in the hard work that's often required to truly understand the nuances of a problem like medication adherence. And a big thank you for sharing what they learned along the way.
Building connected products in digital health is challenging due to the complexity of healthcare systems, especially in the United States. Personal interest and understanding stakeholders' interactions and incentives are critical. Initial naivety can be a learning curve, emphasizing the need for continuous education and understanding how various stakeholders engage with different products. The advice to newcomers is to: 💸 follow the money 👨🎓 invest in personal education ask the right questions 🧠 and continuously absorb knowledge about this intricate sector 🎧 Full episode: https://bit.ly/3TdANDQ #digitalhealth #healthcare #smarthealthcare

New #research found that 65% of patients with a recent cancer diagnosis accessed their online medical records in 2020-2022 -- a significant jump from 40% in 2018. Of those who were recently diagnosed, 40% accessed their records six or more times in the previous year. These findings underscore the growing importance of accessible and streamlined digital health records in patient care. At PatchRx, we're dedicated to developing healthcare tech that breaks down communication barriers, builds trust between providers and patients, and optimizes treatment plans for the best care possible. CEO, Co-Founder at Cofactr, YC W22 | Helping electronic manufacturers accelerate their time to market.
The demand for medication adherence solutions is at an all-time high. PatchRx leads this movement with its smart pill bottle caps that track patient medication consumption and pass this information to healthcare providers. Its biggest challenge? Supply chain delays. Demand for PatchRx’s devices quickly outpaced production, and the team’s ad-hoc approach to component procurement was no longer feasible. To shift to a more proactive procurement process and strengthen supply chain resilience, its team partnered with Cofactr. Several manufacturing cycles later, Cofactr has enabled PatchRx to put component procurement on autopilot — helping drive results like these: • 0% procurement error rate with Cofactr • 20% reduction in component costs • 3-4 week reduction in average completion times Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eD_y8BXr

🏥 Medication adherence is a universal problem. So, the technology designed to solve it must be universally available for every patient, regardless of zip code or socioeconomic status. Andrew Aertker explains how PatchRx designed the current product to ensure every patient who wants and needs the service can use it. And how using SORACOM has been a powerful catalyst for ensuring secure and reliable remote care to the thousands of patients PatchRx supports daily. Check it out below :)
Take an inside look into balancing user adoption with the connectivity challenges commonly found in deploying healthcare technology. Andrew Aertker of PatchRx shared the iterative steps that informed the many technical design decisions behind their smart pill bottle cap. In healthcare, there is a lot of effort aimed at overcoming adoption challenges. The kicker is that these challenges don't just come from users, but also from providers and practitioners involved in the decision-making process of leveraging new health technologies. For PatchRx, their journey included evaluating various prototypes and technologies, from mobile apps to advanced connectivity solutions and network types. Core to the project was ensuring seamless data communication and security, even in rural areas, using flexible mobile networks. In the end, the team balanced embedding technology in the pill bottle hardware and connecting to the outside world using a secondary plug-in gateway device to ensure universal applicability and secure data transfer across any location in the United States across multiple pill bottles in the same household. Check out the full interview to learn more about the PatchRx story and what influenced their product design decisions along the way including: 🔹 Factors Behind Technical Design Decisions 🔹Early Prototypes and Challenges 🔹Mobile App Limitations 🔹Final Design and Connectivity Solutions 🔹Ensuring Universal Applicability 🎧 https://bit.ly/3TdANDQ #podcast #useradoption #smarthealthcare #productjourney
