#MikroMassive: the #Botnet powering #MultiTerabit #DDoSAttacks - read the findings of the Path Network investigation team after examining a collection of eight related attacks between August 22nd and 25th, 2024, which targeted three distinct Path-protected networks. These attacks, all with peak traffic rates over 2Tib/s, demonstrate a significant level of coordination and shared resources, suggesting they were launched from the same botnet. Because of the composition of this botnet, we’ve named it MikroMassive - over a third of its devices appear to be #MikroTik routers, making them a key driving force behind the high-volume DDoS traffic. For the third consecutive year, Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) activity increased in July as we started seeing #DDoSattacks exceeding #1Tbps becoming a weekly occurrence. Just yesterday one of our clients experienced a severe attack aimed at five specific IP addresses. This series of attacks featured multiple spikes surpassing 500 Gbps, peaking at a staggering #1200Gbps (1.2Tbps) during five hours of intense DDoS activity against his infrastructure. The largest of these attacks combined #UDP and #GRE-based #DDoSvectors, predominantly utilizing UDP. Thanks to our Orchestrator's auto-filtering capabilities, the majority was instantly blocked. Any residual threats - smaller but actually more complex DDoS - were mitigated in the 2nd and 3rd layers of protection with stateful firewall rules and custom-built #DDoSfilters, applied by the client when creating the DDoS security profile for each IP in his network. The result was a seamless mitigation process, with neither our client nor their end-users experiencing any disruption. The feedback from our client was clear: 🔹 'Overall, we did not have any issues or notice anything'. 🔹 This incident underscores the robustness and efficacy of our DDoS mitigation strategies in preserving business continuity and ensuring uninterrupted service. Microsoft confirms that Several Microsoft services, such as Azure App Services, Application Insights, Azure IoT Central, Azure Log Search Alerts, Azure Policy, and the Azure interface, were negatively impacted by a global outage caused on July 30, 2024, by a Distributed Denial-of-Service (#DDoS) attack. The event also affected another subset of Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Purview services. UK law enforcement agencies have taken down #DigitallStress, the world’s most prolific underground marketplace offering distributed denial of service (#DDoS) services. The National Crime Agency (NCA) announced the shutdown of digitalstress.su on July 2, achieved through a joint operation with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). In place of the original site, authorities have set up a mirror site displaying a splash page that notifies visitors their data has been captured by law enforcement. This significant operation was disclosed on July 22, following the earlier arrest of a key suspect, known by the alias 'Skiop,' by the PSNI. Around half (49%) of SME IT teams believe they lack the resources and staffing to defend their organization against #cyberthreats, according to a new report by JumpCloud. The survey of 612 IT decision-makers in the UK and US also found that almost half (49%) of SME IT teams have experienced layoffs in the past six months, with 28% reporting they have gone through layoffs and expect more within six months. 181 #zettabytes is the estimated amount of new data being created around the world by 2030, almost double the 2022 level of 97 zettabytes. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the dark fiber sector is growing fast. Figures from Stellar Market Research Pvt Ltd suggest that the global market was worth $6.19 billion last year, a figure that could rise to $14.38 billion by the end of the decade. Billions of kilometers of fiber optic cables circle the globe delivering the data and services required by businesses and consumers. Billions more will be installed for businesses looking to move larger and larger amounts of information.
