About us
Patient Choices Vermont (PCV), founded in 2002, is a non-profit organization dedicated to end-of-life choice. PCV worked for more than ten years to achieve enactment of the Vermont law entitled Patient Choice at End of Life (Act 39). PCV seeks to educate Vermonters about end-of-life options and to influence policy, regulations and practice that affect the terminally ill. PCV's mission resonates with thousands of Vermonters because our cause recognizes the importance of freedom of choice near the end of life. Important liberties such as the choices Act 39 provides require continued vigilance. PCV educates new legislators and sustains its legislative watch function in order to ensure that Act 39 remains in place for the long term. PCV works to ensure that all Vermonters have knowledge and practical access to the choices the Act provides. PCV was instrumental in the establishment of the Vermont office of the national organization, Compassion & Choices, thereby providing access for Vermonters to C&C's staff of medical and patient advisory experts. PCV brings educational programs to communities. We work to forge relationships among medical and care-giving institutions, utilizing the broad expertise and institutional knowledge of our board members and advisers. PCV also works closely with the Death with Dignity National Center which provides valuable advice on policy development and implementation strategy.

"The more I have walked this path and understand what it means to die with dignity, to have your loved ones be okay and helped when they need to be, it's all about knowledge. It's all about talking and communicating," said Torr. "I just feel having a doula has made my life and my family's life so much easier." https://lnkd.in/em5nhGuB

Create post Patient Choices Vermont Public "A society that bans one of the few peaceful deaths available is neither compassionate nor liberal. The United States, congratulating itself on being democratic and open, is starched rigid with laws. Calm, constructive conversations around self-compassionate, elective deaths are ridiculously overdue, yet so many people reel back in horror. Why? Death is not the enemy. Fear and ignorance are our enemies." https://lnkd.in/e6aCJ53j

For the first decade that Act 39 was on the books, only residents of Vermont could use it. Then, last year, lawmakers opened the program to people from out of state. As Vermont Public's Mikaela Lefrak reports, the changes brought an influx of interest to the small state. https://lnkd.in/eK9nuau3

Since New Jersey lawmakers passed an aid-in-dying law five years ago, the number of terminally ill patients who have sought to end their lives by self-administered medication has jumped almost tenfold. Now, advocates are working on two fronts to push state policymakers to “course-correct” the law and make it more accessible to people nearing death with unbearable pain and suffering. https://lnkd.in/eW7eNxUd

Still unprepared for her text, I sucked in my breath reading: “…I have an odd and last-minute question for you. Do you have any time this weekend to be a witness on my written request for Medical Aid in Dying form? You sign saying I am mentally fit, not coerced, etc. If you’re not around, it is OK, so no pressure—can ask someone else.” https://lnkd.in/ebybSSQZ
