I’m extremely excited to publish our latest report: “ACCESS AND OUTLIERS: The Appeal of Small Venture Funds”. https://lnkd.in/gGrgBcQ9 Small funds play a critically important role across the venture ecosystem and we firmly believe that they represent the most attractive segment of the market to support and invest behind. We put this report together to provide more granular detail on these funds and to introduce new frameworks that we’ve used to establish why we are so bullish on small funds. TLDR Our analysis is based on a dataset of ~2,500 funds from 1980 onwards. A portfolio of small funds ($5-50M in size) has the potential to outperform a portfolio of larger funds ($150M+) by approximately 45-60% when adjusted for the probability of accessing the top 5% of larger funds. Our data suggests that small funds have the most attractive combination of a low required “win rate” and a high probability of finding an outperforming fund. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to access the top 5% of larger, more established funds ($150M+ in size). Removing these outperforming and largely inaccessible funds from the fund universe has a significant impact on the relative distribution of potential returns. This naturally has a disproportionately positive impact on the relative attractiveness of smaller, more accessible funds. Lots more details in the report.
