“EPA’s Edison Environmental Center in Edison, NJ, needed a 110-vehicle-capacity parking lot for facility staff and visitors. EPA researchers took this opportunity to design a parking area using low impact development (LID) controls and conduct long-term stormwater management studies. They used permeable pavement and rain gardens, two types of LID green infrastructure practices. Scientists and engineers are evaluating the ability of these practices to reduce negative effects of stormwater runoff, including stream bank erosion, contamination of water sources, and harm to aquatic plant and animal life. The goal is to demonstrate and document the performance and capabilities of three permeable pavement systems: porous asphalt, pervious concrete, and permeable interlocking concrete pavers. Rain gardens were added to capture any runoff from the impervious sections of the parking lot, as well as the sidewalk and nearby roof runoff. "[This] project was a high school parking lot in St. Louis, Missouri. Like most projects, they were way behind schedule and needed to have the parking lot ready to go before school started, and the weather was not hindering progress even further. However, the precast concrete block PaveDrain system and its free-draining aggregate base is made for this. The PaveDrain system came palletized with 11 square foot layers and was ready to install. The six-man crew installed 49,000 square feet in just seven days! Something to consider before you wash your car in the driveway! Unless of course, your driveway is PaveDrain. If you aren’t lucky enough to have a PaveDrain driveway, find a spot with gravel or grass. That way the soapy water won't affect our streams and creeks if it gets washed away since it'll be easier for nature to neutralize! To keep things extra safe - go with non-toxic soap that doesn't contain any nasty chemicals then make sure the wastewater is recycled properly.
