He reached out and asked me to spend the day with his daughter to help put a plan into place for her health. For years, she has been struggling with a variety of symptoms, many of which have been debilitating. Each physician she has seen has attempted to fix 1 or 2 abnormalities. Vitamin d deficiency - prescribe prescription vitamin d. Low iron - start supplementation. They weren’t neglectful. And the treatments weren’t wildly inappropriate. But none of them ever had the time to understand her the way I was able to during that day. I dove into her family history, her living conditions, her exposure to toxins, her response to medications, the timeline of all symptoms, and her spiritual and emotional well-being. When I asked what her physicians said in response to some of these things, she said without hesitation, “Oh none of them know. You’re the only one who has spent the time to understand me.” One day of dedicated attention and intentional action. I realize most practitioners don’t have the ability to do this. So I’m filling in the gap. And her father’s text afterwards said it all. All through my academic career, I fought hard to excel and achieve perfect grades. What does the future of healthcare look like??? Well, depends who you ask... Ok ok. I'm not trying to imply robots will start seeing patients, but these pictures certainly unveil good points about perception with AI in healthcare in the eyes of healthcare executives vs the general population. In the eyes of healthcare executives, they see incorporating AI into healthcare as an excellent way to combat physician shortages while continuing to make profit. For those physicians who do stick around, they are left with no choice other than to take on more patients and whatever other unrealistic new processes for patient care to ensure their doors remain open. Physicians and patients don't come to the table with the same rose-colored glasses. They know what's to come and are trying to warn leadership, but no one will listen. Allowing AI to take part in our healthcare system will NOT equal compassionate, caring or elevated healthcare. It will lead to the absence of the foundation of healthcare - care. The picture on the right is already in motion. Think about it...... Physician suicide rates are up. Physician burnout happens every day. Work-life balance is non-existent for healthcare staff. Mental health for healthcare workers has drastically deteriorated. Physicians are quitting. Nurses are quitting. Techs are quitting. So who's left?!?!?!!! Thank goodness AI is on the way to save us! They won't complain about these horrendous working conditions, right?! The future of our healthcare is in the lives of those physicians' families. The children of physicians, nurses and those alike have the compassion, brilliance and caring nature to go into medicine. However, if you grew up with a parent in medicine who you barely saw, missed countless birthdays, couldn't make family vacations, missed dance recitals, missed football games....... Do you think you would support your children for a career in medicine???? Better yet, do you think your child would WANT that life for themselves??? This can be fixed. We can take a detour that won't lead us towards a grim future in healthcare. "What's good, healthcare?" (pilot episode) I stepped outside of my comfort zone. I love those videos of people who allow us the opportunity to tag along with them as they speak on their topic because, in my opinion, it humanizes them. And that is what's missing in healthcare. So. I thought I would give it a try myself. This is my debut video where I wanted to highlight a positive healthcare experience my daughter recently had at an Atrium Health office. Please excuse my debut video jitters, faux pas, obnoxiously loud trucks and, well....you get the point. It will definitely get better! In a world where there's so many negative healthcare experiences, why not turn our focus to positive ones? Although hard to find these days, they’re certainly worth mentioning. Let's make the conscious decision to turn the narrative to positive experiences in hopes others will follow. If we spotlight those exceptional healthcare experiences, perhaps staff and patients will gravitate towards them, ditch the abysmal care and those facilities will have no other choice BUT to change. MEDICAL CLINIC SPOTLIGHT Northeast Pediatric Pulmonologist Charlotte, NC WHAT MAKES THEM GREAT -treated pediatric patients like kids -offered crayons and coloring sheets to my daughter while we were waiting in the exam room -incredibly mindful about wait times knowing we're on "toddler time" -superhero backdrop in the waiting area during check-in for children to take a picture with and get them excited for their appointment -the physician listened entirely to our concerns and goals -the Toy Story gang was hanging out behind the check-in desk which brought a smile to my daughter's face and allowed me time to do the boring necessities (ie payment, verifying information, etc.) -cleverly designed a trail of fish (stickers) for kids to follow in order to find the exit once the appointment concluded Thank you, Claudia Cometa, PharmD for this recommendation! ❤️ Thank you to all the staff at Northeast Pediatric Pulmonology for taking such great care of my daughter. Time away always gives me space to observe and reflect. My husband and I used points to stay at a Ritz-Carlton property this past week for our anniversary. Austin, the gentleman who checked us in, generously offered us an upgrade to an executive suite, to which my husband expressed sincere gratitude telling him it was our 20th anniversary. Later that evening after dinner, we returned to the upgraded room to a chilled bottle of wine, 2 wine glasses and a handwritten card from Austin wishing us a happy anniversary and wonderful stay. He also left us 2 vouchers for coffee and pastries in the morning before we left. Out of curiosity, we looked up the normal cost for that room - $2400. That sounds astronomical. Until you realize the average cost for one night in a hospital is around $3000. Yes, I realize the utilization of resources is vastly different between the 2 locations. You know what else is vastly different? The experience. The Ritz treats their guests like royalty. At every touch point, they are welcoming, appreciative, and given the freedom by their superiors to go the extra mile. They are keenly aware that their guests could have chosen from a number of other hotels. And they don’t take that for granted. Hospitals, on the other hand, work under the premise that patients need them. There are relatively few options among which patients can choose and insurance companies largely dictate those choices. They are keenly aware of this never ending supply of customers and see no need to meet basic expectations let alone go the extra mile. Staff are barely surviving and can’t possibly pour gratitude and compassion into others. It’s time for the healthcare industry to stop accepting and providing mediocre service and care and learn from other industries that are excelling.
