Recent work for local musician Gary McCullough. We created the cover art for his newest release South on Something. His style is connected to the Appalachian mountain region in which he lives and speaks to themes of journey, overcoming “hard climbs” and natural elements. It is not bluegrass. His musical influences are broad and include insightful singer-songwriters from Jackson Browne and James Taylor to Jason Isbell and John Moreland, as well as southern country/rock bands like the Drive by Truckers and Lucero. Welcome to part II of how Hornsby Creative was born! In my previous post, I tell you about my job prior to diving in entrepreneurship waters. I had it pretty good! But, I can't pretend or was all roses and rainbows. I had my frustrations but I won't go into detail on that here. And it's not as important. Mostly I wanted to continue to grow and sometimes the only way to do that is to get outside of your safe comfort zone, switch gears and be willing to walk away when your at the top of your game to avoid becoming complacent. I wanted to both get back to my art and design roots a little and explore new territory. I wanted to build a business based on MY values of operating from a mindset of love and abundance, rather than scarcity and fear. It's an honor to be able to help others succeed and to support each other to be our best selves. I look for ways to do that daily. Hi! This is John the Chief Creative here and I thought I'd share a little bit about how we got started. See I actually had it pretty good before I decided to jump off the cliff of entrepreneurship. I was the top producing salesperson at the sign company I worked for in town, producing half a million in sales. I made decent money for Asheville, had a company car, benefits, autonomy over my schedule. Nobody was really telling me what to do.⠀ I was in a leadership position and had proven myself through years of hard work and diplomacy. I was an expert in my field and trained and coached others to do the same. Of course, I had to answer to my clients and my coworkers and the owner, but I'd say I had a 98% satisfaction rate, so nobody was on my back, so to speak. I had opportunity to work on many creative projects and lead the design on them. Really just about everything I could want on the surface. ⠀ I had my wife and kids counting on me to bring home the bacon, which I was doing with pretty solid job security. ⠀ Sounds pretty good, right? So… why did I take the risk and burden of striking it out on my own?
