Good news for women who suffer from UTIs. The FDA recently approved a new oral antibiotic called Pivya specifically for the treatment of uncomplicated UTIs, which are contained in the bladder and haven’t spread to the kidneys. Our Dr. Kyle Graham, board-certified OBGYN and medical director at Obstetrics and Gynecology of San Jose, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, spoke with @health about the importance of having another treatment option for painful UTIs that are resistant to commonly used antibiotics and how Pivya works.->https://brnw.ch/21wLmN3

A new blood test can check for signs of preeclampsia, a serious blood pressure condition, in the early weeks of pregnancy. Together with blood pressure monitoring, these measurements can offer health care providers valuable information about a person’s risk for preeclampsia. Our Dr. Anushka Chelliah, board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist and medical director at Obstetrix® Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Houston, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, chatted with @parents about how the new test works, who should get it and how it will impact people at high risk of the condition. -> https://brnw.ch/21wLdRX

Zach and Tori Roloff of TLC’s “Little People Big World” recently shared that their four-year-old daughter was diagnosed with moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Studies report that anywhere from one to 11% of children have the condition, which often goes undiagnosed. The sleep disorder can impact mental and physical health, including behavioral and cognitive issues, impairment in growth and development, heart function and daytime sleepiness. Our Dr. Minal Patel, board-certified pediatrician specializing in sleep medicine at Pediatrix® Specialty Care of Austin, spoke with Sleepopolis about risk factors and treatment options. https://brnw.ch/21wL97d

Adults often turn to melatonin gummies to help catch some z’s, but they’re finding their way into the hands of kids who mistake them for candy. A new analysis published by the CDC found that accidental ingestion of melatonin by kids was responsible for thousands of emergency department visits between 2019 and 2022. While it can cause uncomfortable side effects, the good news is that a melatonin overdose is not known to be fatal. Our Dr. Todd Zimmerman, a pediatric emergency medicine physician and medical director at Pediatrix® Emergency Medicine of Nevada, joins Parents to discuss what to do if your child accidentally ingests melatonin and how to safely store medications and supplements to help prevent it from happening. https://brnw.ch/21wL1sp

Bacterial vaginosis (BV), which comes with unpleasant symptoms like fishy odor, watery gray discharge and burning, pain or irritation of the vulva, can commonly recur. The threshold for recurrent BV is three or more infections in a year. Our Dr. Suzanne Bovone, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of San Jose, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, joins Self Magazine to discuss what might be contributing to chronic infections and how to care for yourself in a recurrent BV cycle. https://brnw.ch/21wKTkF
