At the UN, Vietnam boasts a “dedication” to human rights, but their record tells a different story. Writers, journalists, and human rights defenders in Vietnam face harassment and arbitrary detention. Reprisals like those against writer Pham Doan Trang reflect the grim reality of ongoing human rights violations. Read more in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/ebZ3JxQx
About us
PEN America stands at the intersection of literature and human rights to protect open expression in the United States and worldwide. We champion the freedom to write, recognizing the power of the word to transform the world. Our mission is to unite writers and their allies to celebrate creative expression and defend the liberties that make it possible. PEN America is the largest of more than 100 centers of PEN International. For more than 90 years, we have been working together with our colleagues in the international PEN community to ensure that people everywhere have the freedom to create literature, to convey information and ideas, to express their views, and to make it possible for everyone to access the views, ideas, and literatures of others. In doing so, we are building on a tradition begun in the years following World War I and carried forward by thousands of American writers. Our strength is our membership—a nationwide community of novelists, journalists, editors, poets, essayists, playwrights, publishers, translators, agents, and other professionals, and an even larger network of devoted readers and supporters who join with them to carry out PEN America's mission.

Tomorrow (October 30th), Vietnam will hold a closed-door trial for blogger Duong Van Thai, who exposed government corruption. Thai faces charges under Art. 117 of Vietnam's Penal Code, a provision often used to stifle dissent. PEN America calls on the Vietnamese government to drop all charges against blogger Duong Van Thai and immediately release him. Thai’s work exposing corruption is not a crime—it’s a critical exercise of free expression, essential to accountable governance. By holding a closed-door trial and barring his family, Vietnam denies Thai basic rights to a fair and transparent legal process. PEN America is also concerned that Thai was abducted and forcibly returned to Vietnam. He disappeared in Thailand in April 2023 only to reappear in police custody in Vietnam. This echoes past forced returns of activists and raises serious concerns on transnational repression. https://lnkd.in/ekNdmwWY

Wikipedia has been a free, reliable, go-to source for information about almost anything for over 20 years. Run entirely by volunteers and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, the online repository is one of the most vulnerable corners of the internet in this age of mis- and disinformation. However, with a plethora of tools, from human eyes to bots and extensions, and even AI, it is effectively countering the spread of false information. Talking to PEN America’s Mina Haq, Maggie Dennis, vice president of community resilience and sustainability at the Wikimedia Foundation, discussed how Wikipedia volunteers moderate content for accuracy.
