African Penguin Awareness Day takes place on the second Saturday in October every year to bring awareness to the African Penguin crisis. Currently, there are fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs in the wild. They have lost nearly 99% of their historical population and could be functionally extinct by 2035. We loved seeing our friends Pōhatu penguins participate in #PickUp4Penguins for World Ocean Day! It takes a global effort to help protect penguins and their ocean home.
As part of World Ocean Day 2024, our Pōhatu team member Danielle and her kids went down to Sumner beach to take part in the Penguins International #pickup4penguins dressed as penguins! 🐧 Penguins International is calling penguin lovers to take action to clean up trash in your local neighbourhood to cut down on the marine debris problem in honour of World Ocean Day. Noticing the trash and plastic in your neighbourhood hopefully inspires you to reduce your reliance on single use plastics. #WorldOceanDay2024 #OceanClimateAction
