Penn State Law Alternate Dispute Resolution Program

We are thrilled to introduce Penn State Law's 2024-2025 Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Competition Team! Congratulations to Chinyereugo Uzoho, Andrew Nunn, Erika Uebelhor, James T. Judd, Katie Miller, and Pretima Persaud for earning their spots on the team. We couldn’t be more excited to see them represent us in the upcoming competitions. The selection process this year was incredibly competitive, and we were thoroughly impressed by the talent displayed by all participants. Each round showcased remarkable negotiation skills, making our final selections a challenging decision. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated—you all demonstrated a great understanding of ADR principles and showed immense potential. As we move forward, we invite everyone at Penn State Law to get involved. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your negotiation skills, learn more about conflict resolution, or simply support your peers, there are plenty of opportunities to engage and grow. We’re eager to see what this talented team will achieve and where this exciting journey will lead us throughout the semester! Here’s to a successful and rewarding year ahead!

This year has truly been an extraordinary journey for our program as we navigated through such a wide array of opportunities. We gained experience in a broad spectrum of legal areas, participated in both remote and in-person competition formats, and embraced roles that spanned negotiation to mediation. Throughout this adventure, our 17 team members tested their skills over the span of 8 competitions, not just participating but achieving significant milestones in key events: William and Mary: Abdulai Rashid and Drake Olson went undefeated in their rounds at William and Mary. Villanova eSports Competition: We emerged victorious, with Alexander Senft, Gurtej Grewal, and Katie Miller coached by Abdulai Rashid securing 🥇1st  & Chinedu Okeke, Drake Olson, Luke DeWeese and Ryan Millea coached by Khalid Smith taking 🥉3rd place—a testament to our strategic prowess and teamwork. The Negotiation Challenge for Professionals: Abdulai Rashid and Lawrence Miller claimed 🥉3rd place with pride, showcasing our negotiation and mediation skills under pressure. Brooklyn Law School Athlete Endorsement Negotiation Competition: Lawrence Miller and Khalid Smith secured 5th place, demonstrating an amazing resilience and ability to adapt and excel. Most recently at the New York Bar Mediation Competition: We proudly took home 🥉3rd place. Special congratulations to our very own Alexander Senft, Drake Olson, and Temidoyin O. for their exceptional performances and a thank you to our amazing coaches Khalid Smith, Lawrence Miller and Abdulai R.. With amazing performances from our other two teams as well! This year has been more than a series of accolades; it's been a period of growth, resilience, and collective efforts. Through engaging in a wide variety of competitions, we didn't just test our skills—we strengthened the bonds within our team! We extend our deepest gratitude to every team member, coach, mentor, and supporter for their steadfast belief and contributions to our journey. Your support has been pivotal to our success. Penn state is offering the Student Org Hour Challenge, so the student organization that brings in the most gifts between 12PM and 1PM on GivingTuesday, today, 11/28, will be awarded $1,000 towards their campaign. With second being awarded $500 towards their campaign, and third place $250 towards their campaign.Contributions from supporters like you are vital in funding essential aspects of our program, including competition fees, travel, and accommodations. The Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) program is a student-run organization that trains law students in the collaborative negotiation model. The practical skills we train are used in national and international competitions in preparation for legal and corporate practice. Alternative dispute resolution is crucial to the practice of law and a necessary skill for aspiring attorneys. Applying these skills in competition allows students to develop communication skills that they utilize in all areas of their lives. As a new program at Penn State Law, gifts and donations allow us to provide training and competition experience to as many students as possible without placing a financial burden on our students. Any gifts received will be used to purchase training programs, as well as help to cover registration costs, travel, and accommodations for our competitions. Our goals for this year are to compete in as many competitions as possible and to place as high as possible. So far this year, we have been able to send seven students to the Villanova ESports Competition, where they excelled, earning first and third place in the final rounds. Last year (the first that we trained students), we placed second in negotiations and third in mediation in the Online Dispute Resolution Competition, an international negotiation and mediation competition. Additionally, we progressed to the later rounds of the National Black Law Student Association Negotiation Competition. We plan to compete in the Negotiation Challenge for Professionals and Students; the Cardozo Invitational Negotiation on Entertainment, Media and Art Competition; the National Black Student Association Nelson Mandela International Competition, the William and Mary Negotiation Competition; the New York State Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Annual Meditation Tournament; and the American Bar Association Mediation Competition. Our goal is to raise enough to send thirty-one students to the competitions listed above. This would be a large expansion from the activities of prior years and reflect the weekly participation that our training gets.
