Rebecca Lee, one of Penn-Mar’s awesome Direct Support Professionals, has been making the most of her summer by taking groups of Penn-Mar individuals out to farms in Towson and Freeland, Maryland, partnering with the Baltimore-area horticulture nonprofit TALMAR. Everyone has been getting their hands dirty, picking loads of fruits and veggies, and having a blast doing it! Penn-Mar continues to support our Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), our frontline healthcare workers who are the backbone of what we do. That's one of the reasons we are happy to share that our starting hourly wage for new DSPs is now $19/hr, well above the national average. Another terrific success story from Penn-Mar's Job Development Team! Joey Clune (2nd from RT in the below photo) just finished a 6-week internship at Techno Rescue, an IT Asset Management and Electronic Recycling company in Frederick, MD. In fact, his manager said that if they had an immediate opening, they'd hire Joey "on the spot!" The internship was secured as part of the Work-based Learning Experience (WBLE) program. To land this great opportunity, our team worked w/ the Maryland State Department of Education’s Division of Rehabilitation Services, which provides pre-employment transition services to young people with disabilities ages 14-21, and administers/funds the WBLE. The 5-session training program will allow DSPs to receive a “ACRE Certificate of Achievement” certificate. With a focus on supporting intellectual and developmentally disabled people finding rewarding employment, the 5-session series is led by two esteemed Penn-Mar team members, Kevin Walker and Tricia Munchel Zeltwanger, CESP.
