PHS's forthcoming research project, Unearthing the Stories of Philadelphia Gardening, is honored to have received a grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage! 🌱 An exploration of the past and present of gardening in Philadelphia, this project from PHS and the Athenaeum of Philadelphia focuses on the contributions of individuals and communities often overlooked in traditional Eurocentric narratives. 🎞️ Our exhibition of archival stories and demonstration garden (planted at the Athenaeum) are the type of catalytic work that enhances public life in Greater Philadelphia, and that The Pew Center invests in. Our teams will be working on this project for the next couple of years — we are so excited to begin digging into our rich local history. #PewArtsGrants

PHMC recently celebrated a $12 million federal award for the implementation of the Philly Tree Plan! U.S. Forest Service joined Philly Tree Plan partners at the Public Health Campus on Cedar to showcase the impact of USDA’s investment in our 10-year strategic plan for urban forest growth and care. Special thanks to Rep. Rick Krajewski, Senator Bob Casey’s office, and USDA for your support of this collaborative effort to equitably build the city’s tree canopy! And thank you to Philly Tree Plan partners Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), Fairmount Park Conservancy, PowerCorpsPHL, The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia, and The School District of Philadelphia. This fall, we're celebrating 50 years of PHS's urban greening in the Philadelphia region 🌳♻️🌼 What began in the late 1970s as our "Philadelphia Green" initiative (pictured here) has evolved into a robust slate of community programs that we now call our Healthy Neighborhoods department. The work carried out by the Healthy Neighborhoods team had its beginnings in 1974 under the leadership of Ernesta Drinker Ballard, PHS’s first female president, using proceeds from the Philadelphia Flower Show to work with communities to build vegetable gardens on vacant lots. 🍅🥒 Today, our work in 250+ neighborhoods in the Philadelphia region is still supported by community efforts and proceeds from the Flower Show. You can directly support this work by becoming a PHS member: https://bit.ly/3zuf8jQ #PhiladelphiaFlowerShow #PhillyHistory

I had a great time tonight at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS)'s Honors and Volunteer Thank You Reception. I had the joy and honor to present two of the awards tonight, including the Award of Merit to Sarah Anton, a Tree Tenders champion who has tirelessly advocated for trees. Our work would be impossible without the time and effort of hundreds of volunteers who plant trees, manage gardens, help at the flower show, and so much more. A big thank you if you're one of those volunteers! Your work makes a huge positive difference. A big shout out to the PHS team for putting such a great event together!
