🚌 A huge thank you to Senator Scott Martin for being one of our most dedicated champions for school bus safety in Harrisburg! For the second year in a row, Senator Martin has served as a sponsor, alongside Senators Senator Wayne Langerholc, Jr. and Dave Argall, of the Senate resolution recognizing School Bus Safety Week in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. From promoting safety standards to raising awareness, Senator Martin’s work makes a difference for families across PA. 🚌 https://lnkd.in/e-NEa56m

In honor of National School Bus Safety Week, the PSBA is uniting for once again for Operation Safe Stop today! Many of our contractors are working with their school districts and law enforcement to ensure that they are educating drivers, students and parents how to safely travel with school buses on the road. In 2023 after a successful event, the Shapiro Administration announced the following: ⚠176 violations of the law – fewer than the 252 reported in 2022 ⚠“During one day targeted enforcement and education event, nearly 40 percent fewer violations reported this year compared to last year” ⚠“Drivers might consider the steep penalties if convicted of disobeying Pennsylvania's School Bus Stopping Law - a $250 fine, five points on your driving record and a 60-day license suspension. The fine increases to $300 if someone is caught by a stop arm camera...But even worse than these penalties, a tragedy could occur if either a driver or a student is not paying attention to their surroundings." (PSP's Cpl Zena Black) Let's look forward to even better numbers this year and make sure to send in your pictures of how you are participating!

Get to know the Danger Zone! School buses are the safest form of highway transportation, but did you know that the most dangerous part of the school bus ride is getting on and off the school bus? The “Danger Zone” is the area on all sides of the bus where children are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver (ten feet in front of the bus where the driver may be too high to see a child, ten feet on either side of the bus where a child may be in the driver’s blind spot, and the area behind the school bus). Here's how to stay safe around the danger zone: 🚸Arrive at the bus stop five minutes early. 🚸Stand at least 10 feet away from the edge of the road. 🚸Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says its okay before stepping onto the bus. 🚸Be careful that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps or dangling objects do not get caught in the handrail or door when exiting the bus. 🚸Walk in front of the bus; never walk behind the bus. 🚸Be sure the bus driver can see you, and you can see the bus driver. Have you ever considered helping your community provide safe transportation?
