In the face of unprecedented heat, free A/C units are a great start. But what about paying the monthly electricity bill? ▪ The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has reinitiated its summer cooling assistance program, providing complimentary air conditioning equipment and maintenance services to qualifying residents. ▪ This initiative, now in its third year, utilizes surplus funds from the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). ▪ Eligible households may receive air conditioning units, fans, or repairs to existing cooling systems, with the program's scope determined by the applicant's specific needs. ▪ However, unlike similar programs in other states, Pennsylvania's initiative does not subsidize electricity costs associated with increased air conditioning usage. ▪ Therefore, a significant challenge persists: many low-income households, despite having access to cooling equipment, struggle to manage the consequent increase in energy expenses. This is why Peoples Energy Analytics was founded. We work with utilities to help connect at-risk customers with the assistance they need to manage their monthly bills. Peoples Energy Analytics
Data Infrastructure and Analytics
A complete data-based solution designed to modernize the way energy utilities improve the lives of their customers.
About us
Energy insecurity shows up in different ways. Homes are kept at unsafe or unhealthy temperatures. Competing necessities such as medication or food aren’t purchased. Payments are missed, resulting in disconnections or outages. To address energy insecurity, we need analytics-driven solutions focused on targeting and assisting individuals who may be overlooked. Our vision is to dramatically reduce energy insecurity by working alongside utility companies to accurately identify households in need of financial assistance, segment them across key demographic categories, and approach them with direct support opportunities.

To address the energy poverty problem we will need holistic solutions. This will involve combinations of weatherization, solar, and energy efficiency upgrades.
Just came across this interesting paper by Kerby, et al. (2024). A targeted approach to energy burden reduction measures: Comparing the effects of energy storage, rooftop solar, weatherization, & energy efficiency upgrades. #EnergyTransition #EnergyPoverty https://lnkd.in/e72zsEPZ

Creating scalable methods to find people at risk of heat stroke during these heat domes are vital to protecting renters, students, elderly, and low-income populations. We can do this for pennies on the dollar. https://lnkd.in/dCH-u-DT
Back in 1981 this ice company was helping people cope during the heat waves. Today one of the researchers asked me if there was funding for purchasing a window AC unit since the Pittsburgh heat wave has been brutal. First time we hit 100 degrees in 30 years! I struggled to explain that I could not buy them household equipment from my research funding (not trying to commit fraud). But as someone who as a student got heat illness and severe migraines during the heat wave in MA when I couldn't afford to by an AC, I decided to purchase them one with my own money and asked them to send me their Venmo. To date I think I have purchased 6 window units (none of which are in my house). Reminder to check in with anyone you think might be struggling to stay cool this summer. Heat is dangerous. A $200 AC unit may be small expense to one person (depending on stage in life) , but a life saver to another. #heatWave #HeatDome #EnergyEfficiency #Energy #EnergyPoverty

Very honored to be spotlighted. When I decided to start Peoples Energy Analytics the whole goal was to make sure my academic research at Carnegie Mellon University didn't stay in a paper no one read. Then early on people told me that it would be hard to create a for-profit company that focused on improving the lives of people who had trouble paying their energy bills. Now that paper has been read by over 18,000 people and our company is getting customers. Looks like each utility we work with knows helping people pay their bills is good for business and good for the community. Hard to know if I'm in a wave or a movement, but I'm happy things are changing in the way we approach helping vulnerable households.

A reminder to watch those indoor heat levels. Phoenix made international headlines last summer for record heat. High temperatures at or above 110 degrees Fahrenheit for all but one day of July set a new record for the hottest month in a U.S. city. Extreme heat events have been made much more likely by climate change, a result of heat-trapping greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned for energy. Solutions include reducing energy use, improving efficiency and transitioning the grid to renewable sources like wind and solar. In Phoenix, 98% of homes have an air conditioning unit installed, making its housed residents generally more prepared for heat waves than people living in locations like the Northeast. Last summer's extremes still took their toll on Phoenix residents, who weather the highest annual cooling requirement of the nation's 50 largest cities. Smart meter data can really help find the household's at risk of high indoor temperatures. Finding households for equitable heat pump deployment is key to achieving an equitable net-zero future.
There are many households who limit their energy use to the point where they could be putting themselves at risk. We found that for low-income households in a southern region they were limiting their air conditioning use more than high income households. Some may think that this disparity is just because of differences in households sizes, but the difference in AC energy use is greater than a window unit. Thus, we are most likely seeing infrastructure gaps in our climate adaptation strategies. The households lacking ACs should be the primary candidates for heat pumps. Video on the disparities between home energy use for ACs. https://lnkd.in/eVSmYU8K Paper on homes lacking ACs: https://lnkd.in/ddef3Vj3 Paper highlighting how energy limiting behavior became worse for low income households during the pandemic: https://lnkd.in/eKAf7Mie Thank you to the Alfred P. Finding people struggling to pay their energy bills became more complicated after the pandemic. Using data and analytics to find these households is critical. This new paper shows how low income households experienced difficulty in meeting their energy needs during the pandemic. At Peoples Energy Analytics we have expanded our business solution to not only find households needing assistance, but also sign them up for energy assistance. Solving the energy poverty problem is complicated but doable. However it will take a ton of collaboration.
New paper on how households changed tradeoffs they made between cooling their homes and essential needs (i.e. food and medicine) during the pandemic. in our paper titled "Comfort or cash? Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on energy insecurity and energy limiting behavior" we surveyed multiple households in Phoenix and Chicago. Overall, we found lower-income households reported disproportionately worse and worsened energy poverty status before and during the pandemic, where they were worse off to begin with, and experienced disproportionally negative effects during the pandemic, 33 % more than higher-income households. Comparing results from two survey regions, we saw 27 % of respondents in both Chicago and Phoenix report difficulty cooling their homes during the summer in 2019, despite Chicago only having <25 % of Phoenix's cooling degree days.
