A big day for small businesses in Northeast D.C.! Through our Energizing Small Business Grant Program, we’re providing nearly $600,000 to eight small businesses in Northeast D.C. to expand fresh food access, improve operations, and combat food insecurity. This initiative is part of a larger $1 million investment in the community, including $300,000 in grants for schools and nonprofits that uplift the neighborhoods surrounding our Benning Service Center. A strong energy workforce starts with early exposure to STEM. At the Watts Up with Sustainability event, more than 40 future leaders from Jack and Jill of America, Inc.’s Montgomery County, MD, Chapter explored hands-on learning experiences designed to ignite their curiosity and innovation.    Thanks to the strong female leadership at Jack and Jill from Holli Townsend, Celia Washington, and Erica Pollard, along with the support of Montgomery County Council Vice President Will Jawando and Pepco Holdings Vice President of Regulatory Policy and Strategy Amber Perry, PMP, CISA, these bright minds are gaining the tools to shape the future of energy. Investing in a strong, skilled workforce starts today, and the impact is even greater when we work together. At their annual Founders Day event, our partners at the University of the District of Columbia named Pepco the Community Partner of the Year – a recognition that speaks to the power of our years-long collaboration.    Through our partnerships with anchor academic institutions, we’re expanding access to scholarships, internships, and mentorship programs. The Power Scholars Program is a key part of that effort, covering full tuition and housing for rising sophomores’ final three years, ensuring they don’t just graduate but enter the workforce with the skills and experience to lead. Their talent is already shining bright; our job is to make sure we meet that talent with opportunity.     This honor means so much, but what matters most is seeing the difference we make, together. Thank you to our UDC partners, President Dr. Maurice Edington, Christopher D. Bell, Dr. April Massey, and Dr. Mashonda S., for your dedication to shaping the next generation of leaders.  

STEM education helped me establish a strong foundation early in my career and I am committed to making sure the next generation has the same opportunities. I had the joy of combining my professional career at Pepco Holdings with my passion for STEM education during a recent event with Jack and Jill of America, Inc. The day was filled with hands-on STEM education activities and career discussions with our dynamic Engineers. Watching my daughter and her peers light up as they learned about energy and sustainability, discovered potential exciting career paths, and realized the opportunities available to them reinforced my belief in the power of exposure. When kids see what’s out there, they can start imagining their own futures and dreams! What better time for this event than during #WomensHistoryMonth – partnering with an incredible organization of mothers invested in shaping a future full of opportunities for children. Early exposure to STEM, mentorship, and representation all play a critical role in empowering our future leaders. On Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Action Day, we were on Capitol Hill advocating for continued funding for energy assistance programs in DC and Maryland. In 2024, Pepco helped more than 42,000 customers secure over $39 million in energy assistance, including $13 million in LIHEAP grants. Every dollar invested in a small business has a multiplying effect. It creates jobs, fuels our local economy, and strengthens entire communities.
