SCIENCE FICTION THINKING FOR TECH & FILM

About us

Perception is an Emmy nominated, cutting edge design lab pioneering the visionary process of Science Fiction Thinking to architect the future. We divide our time equally between the parallel worlds of science-fiction— working with trailblazing filmmakers— and science-fact— collaborating with the world’s most innovative technology brands. We use Science Fiction to perceive the world through the lens of what is possible instead of what currently exists. It allows us to mine our wildest imaginings of the future to analyze the present and consult with businesses to create and innovate. Drawing upon our vast experience conceptualizing and developing future tech for the biggest sci fi blockbusters of the last decade, we are able to inspire and guide the most cutting edge tech leaders across the globe. Using Science Fiction Prototyping, we create futuristic, forward looking experiences that look and feel as authentic as possible in order to open the minds of corporate leadership and stakeholders to the wondrous potential of what their technology is truly capable of. We don’t just tell stories, we build WORLDS.

This month marks 15 years since our first feature film with Marvel Studios, Iron Man 2 https://shorturl.at/ZIyfS a true watershed for Perception. In June 2009, we were given an opportunity to create 1 small piece of design, the Stark Expo logo animation that keystones the opening scene of the film. This was it—our moment—the chance me and my partner Danny Gonzalez had been working tirelessly for over 8 years to get for Perception. We took that assignment on with all the intensity and passion we could muster. It was a quick project, maybe 2 weeks in total, but there was no way the two of us were going to let that be our only contribution to this film. I picked up on an upcoming need for the film that was casually mentioned on a conference call—there’s a transparent Stark tech phone that needed an interface design. We jumped on that, as we have since day 1 of Perception, that’s always been The Perception Way—we don’t wait for something to be handed to us, we instead try to improve our odds to work in our favor. Over a weekend, we created our own science fiction prototype of the Stark phone to send to the Marvel team to show them what we were capable of, how much passion and excitement we have for these characters and this universe. To show them, this is what we’re made of. Cut to the end of the story. Our collaboration on Iron Man 2 eventually snowballed into over 120 shots of vfx and design in the film. It pushed Perception to the very edge of our capabilities—creatively, technically, as individuals and as a team. Some of us relished it, others panicked. But it is in these moments of discomfort that true growth and progress are made. The response to our work in IM2 opened the door for Perception to begin working with tech innovators from across the globe. Most importantly, it was the beginning of a multi decade partnership with Marvel Studios that we are so grateful for and will always treasure. And this all started in ‘09 when Disney’s acquisition of Marvel was being finalized and Marvel Studios was a small independent studio still building its foundation. It’s a meaningful moment to look back on where it all began for me, as a kid with a love for Marvel Comics. In 2017, I reflected on this in my blog A Love Letter to Marvel https://shorturl.at/0ca89 Gratitude is such an important value, if not the most important. One of the amazing outcomes of this love for Marvel and the resulting 15+ years of work is that we have been able to give so many young artists, at all levels, so many incredible opportunities they never would’ve found anywhere else but Perception, working alongside Danny and me. I am grateful for that. It all originated with both of our passions and love of a brand and an inextinguishable fire to achieve a goal and make it happen. To all those who have joined us on this path, thank you for being a part of this incredible adventure. And a very special thanks to Marvel for their trust in us, & taking a chance on us so many years ago!

Dark. Enigmatic. Moody. Haunting— Moon Knight’s Title Design 🌙 Laced with symbols and hidden meanings, much like the show itself, there’s more than meets the eye in this gripping title sequence. In preparation for their newest Disney+ series, Marvel Studios asked us to design an incredibly unique title sequence to match an equally unique hero: Moon Knight. Moon Knight follows the story of Steven Grant, a gentle man who begins to realize that he’s not the only alter existing inside his body. Full of mystery, action and fascinating mythology, our team was tasked to design the main on end title sequence for this epic adventure. We’re extremely honored for the recognition this title sequence has received. Thank you Telly Awards. Click the 🔗 in our bio to get a behind-the-scenes reveal of how we did it.
