Why is change so threatening? PERIL's Cynthia Miller-Idriss talks to (Dutch) De Groene Amsterdammer: "What you see with Donald Trump and other populists is that fear mongering is deliberately used to get voters to vote in a certain way. More and more Americans are willing to support political violence. Polls show that only a third of Republicans trust the election results if Donald Trump loses." “Fear of change or progress, fear of being replaced, fear of the breakdown of the gender binary, and that horrible fear of the dismantling of patriarchy,” Miller-Idriss says via video. “Fear of having something taken away or taken away from you. Fear of loss. And then specific fears are expressed in anti-trans rhetoric, fear of harm to children, fear and moral panic around homosexuality.” #politicalviolence #polarization #extremism Check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eaJSttw4

It was such a joy to be in Pittsburgh for this years Eradicate Hate Global Summit ! Our team from the Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab (PERIL) left feeling inspired and motivated by the stories of resilience from victims and survivors, and the many success stories from individuals and organizations around the globe. As the election looms and the year draws to a close, we know the work against hate and bias is never done. However we take with us a strong resolve to work towards a better world.

Proud to bring insights gleaned from the recent National Association of Independent Schools, The Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington (AISGW), and Friends Council on Education symposium, "Seeking Civility During Uncivil Times," to St. Anne's School of Annapolis. A gift to meaningfully connect with students, parents, and colleagues alongside Close Up Foundation and Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab (PERIL) for our first Pluralism Potluck! #CultivatingConnections
“Potlucks are civic spaces that both embody and celebrate pluralism.” - Eboo Patel, Founder & President at Interfaith America Last week, parents, students, and staff gathered for a Pluralism Potluck to discuss civil discourse and civic engagement. In addition to watching the documentary Bring It to the Table by Julie Winokur, discussion revolved around issues-centered education, the importance of fostering deliberation, critical thinking, and genuine listening skills in young learners, and how students shouldn’t be asked to just sit at the table, but to bring something to it as engaged, respectful, and civic-minded citizens.
